Description


The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks, and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George's counties. In Prince George's County, we are also responsible for developing the County's public recreation programs.

The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, Southern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Automotive/Equipment Mechanic II. This position will report to Watkins Park Maintenance Yard. Under general supervision, the position will perform the full range of difficult, skilled mechanical work on a variety of gasoline, diesel, and electric-powered vehicles and power equipment. In addition, it will perform other related duties as assigned.


WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday from 6 am -2:45 pm

Please note that the salary above represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range is $52,549-$72,810. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Troubleshoots and determines the cause of equipment malfunction to identify the type and extent of necessary repairs. Conducts technical research.
  • Performs difficult mechanical work. Performs major repairs on cars, trucks, and other equipment. Major repairs include rebuilding, changing, aligning, and modifying components and assemblies of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles (e.g., engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, axles, etc.) by fitting and installing parts needed (e.g., valves, pistons, gears, bearings, cylinders, etc.) to exacting tolerances, clearances, and specifications. Connects, meshes, aligns, and adjusts systems to ensure proper operation. Repairs electrical, mechanical, exhaust, fuel, lubrication, cooling, hydraulic, electronic, and computer utility system malfunctions.
  • Completes required administrative paperwork and record-keeping associated with service requests and inventory.
  • Follows all OSHA/MOSHA rules to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Replaces or overhauls brake and fuel systems, generators, alternators, starters, distributors, and electronic ignition systems. Rebuilds and replaces brakes, lights, horns, belts, hoses, shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rods, mufflers, fuel pumps, and other parts. Cleans and paints equipment. Replaces broken parts.
  • Changes oil, filters, and fluids. Lubricates moving parts. Replaces or charges batteries. Inflates, balances, changes, and rotates tires. Adjusts brakes and clutches and tunes up engines. Repairs vehicle emissions systems.
  • Drives motor vehicles to carry workers and haul tools, equipment, materials, and supplies. Loads and unloads tools, equipment, supplies, and materials. Set up tools and equipment. Tows vehicles and equipment to the garage for repairs.
  • Reports for weather-related emergencies.
  • Attend trainings to maintain or attain certifications related to job functions
  • Works as part of a team to ensure a working and safe fleet for the various departments and operations.
  • Communicate and share information regarding diagnostics, repairs, and safety concerns with the supervisor and colleagues.
Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Completion of an approved mechanical apprentice program; or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance and repair on automotive and/or heavy motor equipment.
  3. Two (2) years of experience at the journey level.
  4. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
  5. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  6. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within 12 months of employment.
  7. Pass Commission medical examination.

The following benefit summary is provided for informational purposes only and is not, nor should be construed as an employment agreement with the M-NCPPC, implied or actual. It is not all-inclusive and is subject to change. Benefits listed are extended to all Merit System employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). All plans are optional except the Defined Benefit and Long-Term Disability plans.

Eligibility
You have 45 days from your hire date to elect your benefits. Your coverage begins on the first of the month following receipt of your enrollment forms and required documentation.

Retirement Programs
  • Defined Benefit Plan (Mandatory Participation) - Plan E excludes FOP members.

Plan Employee Contribution Plan C 9.5%* of base salary (FOP members only) Plan E 4% of base salary up to maximum Social Security Wage Base (SSWB) and 8% in excess of SSWB.

  • Retiree Healthcare - Eligibility requires, at least 10 years of eligible service and continuous enrollment in M-NCPPC plans (or proof of continuous enrollment in comparable plans) during the 36 months immediately preceding your retirement date. Premium cost share based on years of service

Health Insurance Plans (FOP Members Pay 23% for Medical, Prescription and Dental and same as all other employees for Vision.) All other employees pay percentage below.*

  • Benefits paid at 66 2/3% of base salary, maximum of $6,000/month

Supplemental Long-Term Disability Insurance (Employee Pays 100%)
  • Benefits paid at 66 2/3% of base salary that exceeds $108,000; capped at $216,000

Basic Life and AD&D Insurance (Employee Pays 20%: Commission Pays 80%)
  • Two (2) times base salary; maximum benefit is $200,000 for each
  • Automatic coverage with opt-out provision

Supplemental and Spouse/Dependent Life Insurance (Employee Pays 100%)
  • Supplemental - 1,2,3,4, or 5 times base salary; maximum benefit is $750,000
  • Spouse/Dependent Combination - $10,000/$5,000, $20,000/$10,000, or $30,000/$15,000

Sick Leave Bank (Contribution and Benefit hours prorated for part-time employees)
  • Employees have 60 days from date of hire to enroll.
  • Employee contributes 8 leave hours each year
  • Annually covers up to 688 hours for own serious medical condition, and 480 hours for parental responsibilities (birth, adoption or foster care), and 80-160 hours for serious medical condition of an immediate family member
