Position Details Position Type: Substitute Teacher Date Posted: 6/8/2026 Date Available: 08/17/2026 Closing Date: 07/31/2026 Description The Family and Consumer Sciences teacher is responsible for helping students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible adults. The teacher leads, coordinates, and develops an interdisciplinary approach to Family and Consumer Sciences education. Salary & Benefits Starting rate: $299.84 per day No additional benefits associated with this position Qualifications Bachelor's Degree Current State of Illinois teaching certificate registered in Lake County with an endorsement in family and consumer sciences Ability to plan and teach appropriate grade‑level curriculum Ability to establish collaborative relationships with teaching staff Experience teaching family and consumer sciences topics Strong family and consumer sciences experience and skills Experience teaching middle school students – preferred Essential Functions Personal and Professional Qualities The teacher must possess the ability to work tactfully and effectively with students, teachers, administrators, other employees of the school district, and the public in accomplishing the purpose of this position. They must display evidence of an educational philosophy in agreement with that of the school and district. They should display an understanding of theories of learning most closely associated with the district's present educational program. They must display an ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents. Performance Responsibilities I. Instructional Methods / Assessment of Learning Communicates high expectations for every student. Provides opportunities for every student to succeed. Teaches utilizing a variety of strategies. Leads students to higher‑level thinking skills through questioning strategies that require students to recall, explain, compare and contrast, synthesize, and evaluate information. Uses a variety of learning aids, technology, materials, and equipment to stimulate higher level thinking. Involves all students in the learning process and adjusts instruction according to the needs of the students. Demonstrates knowledge of diagnostic and prescriptive instructional techniques. Is knowledgeable about a variety of evaluation tools and uses them appropriately to assess student progress. Seeks assistance from qualified sources when needed for more comprehensive diagnosis. Adapts the design of the lesson, instructional methods, and materials to the specific needs and abilities of individual pupils. Monitors and evaluates students on the basis of learner outcomes as defined in district curriculum. Makes use of local and standardized assessment results in planning for instruction. Facilitates ways to integrate technology infusion, project based and applied learning experiences, school to career connections for students. Creates opportunities for parent education. II. Planning and Preparation / Knowledge Demonstrates effective preparation for student instruction in Family and Consumer Sciences education. Plans lessons linked to the curriculum to reflect an understanding of group and individual student needs utilizing all available resources including a variety of teaching materials and support staff. Demonstrates knowledge of content/curriculum. Effectively implements and designs curriculum for the district. Interrelates concepts, themes, and strategies. Relates new content to material previously presented. Has command of subject content. Presents accurate information. Presents material appropriate to developmental level of students. Implies scope and sequence of the curriculum at the appropriate level and relates plans to clearly defined objectives, which are consistent with district curriculum. Shares current trends and implementing ideas of Family and Consumer Sciences with the building principal and with staff to support Family and Consumer Sciences education and ways to infuse it throughout the building. Coordinates the development and enhancement of Family and Consumer Sciences curricula for instructional programs. Develops and carries out plans, programs, and activities to support the implementation of the Family and Consumer Sciences curricula and instructional programs. Presents Family and Consumer Sciences professional development training. Collaborates with curriculum committees. Locates and accesses expertise within the Family and Consumer Sciences community. Facilitates student participation in national and local Family and Consumer Sciences organizations and competitions. III. Learning Environment and Management Creates an environment that is safe, orderly, and conducive to learning. Establishes and maintains clearly defined routines and procedures. Is a positive role model for students. Encourages and facilitates active engagement in the learning process. Establishes and maintains consistent and realistic behavior expectations with a restorative practices lens. Creates a positive environment by dealing with behavior in a fair, respectful, restorative, sensitive, and consistent manner. Recognizes and reinforces acceptable behavior so that students can self‑monitor. Establishes high expectations and fosters pride in accomplishments. Shows maturity of judgment under pressure; ability to resolve/mediate problems in a timely and effective manner. IV. Communication and Interpersonal Relationships Promotes a team effort among school/district staff members. Respects the opinions of other staff members. Shares ideas and materials. Assists and supports colleagues. Shares relevant information regarding students with appropriate personnel in a confidential manner. Promotes positive relationships with parents. Maintains ongoing communication with parents regarding instructional programs, classroom policies, practices, and procedures. Acts as a liaison among administration, teachers, parents, and students to support a well‑developed Family and Consumer Sciences education. V. Professionalism Participates in activities to enhance professional growth which may include, but not be limited to, workshops, course work, conferences, seminars, and professional publications. Demonstrates an awareness of educational issues and knowledge of current research. Contributes to the professional community. Sets appropriate professional goals which can demonstrate but are not limited to risk‑taking, innovation, and/or sharing. Shows evidence of achievement toward goals. Engages in self‑evaluation. Demonstrates punctuality in fulfilling responsibilities. Maintains confidentiality regarding student information. Complies with applicable board/administration policies/regulations. Physical Demands & Work Environment General Physical Requirement Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
