General Summary

We are seeking for a new Post-Doctoral fellow to work in our new Biology Lab at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. The Post-Doc Fellow, Biology Lab will work independently within the scope of our research projects and will combine cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and muscle tissue physiology to understand the processes of skeletal muscles impairment in children with cerebral palsy and stroke patients. The main focus of our research is to discover new biomarkers and to develop in vitro/in vivo assays that could predict clinical outcomes or support muscle rehabilitation in our patient populations.

Principal Responsibilities

The Post-Doc Fellow, Biology Lab will:

1. Design, execute and interpret research pertaining to muscle stem cells and tissue homeostasis in children with cerebral palsy and stroke patients.
2. Develop new 3D-printed cell and tissue culture assays for biomarkers and therapeutic discovery in cerebral palsy and stroke.
3. Assist with development of collaborative projects within and outside the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and test ideas for new projects development.
4. Apply for fellowships and grants for external lab funding and career development.
5. Develop, submit and publish the results of research projects in high quality journals and present data to public conferences/seminars when needed.
6. Participate weekly lab meetings, journal clubs and seminars.
7. Build and maintain a well-organized and accountable journal of own laboratory protocols, experiments, results and analyses.
8. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

1. Reports directly to the assigned Principal Investigator

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

1. Requires the academic knowledge associated with a doctorate degree in Life Sciences (PhD), Bioengineering (PhD) and/or a Medical Doctorate (MD) degree.
2. Less than 4 years of postdoctoral training.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
4. General knowledge or interest in rehabilitation and specific knowledge in biomedical or clinical principles of muscle tissue and muscle cell biology.
5. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills needed to participate as a creative member of a growing research team.
6. Ability to exchange ideas and to work closely with clinicians, patients and professional organizations.
7. Willingness to network within the Institute and to independently strengthen/develop new external collaborations.
8. Ability to timely plan and to coordinate project completions.

Working Conditions

1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
