The Registered Nurse (RN) focuses on safe, effective patient and family-centered care, customer satisfaction, and quality outcomes. The RN supervises licensed and non-licensed staff members. The RN is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the plan of care. The RN prioritizes patient and family comforts, education, and satisfaction. The RN applies his/her educational and professional experiences in the delivery of quality care and mentoring or precepting staff. The RN performs assessments and reassessments per policy and procedure, demonstrating the ability to make independent decisions. The RN initiates, prioritizes, and implements the plan of care and reviews and revises it as necessary. The RN collaborates with patients and families, utilizing resources appropriately to support the needs of the organization and patient. The RN monitors and documents the response to clinical interventions. The RN facilitates, coordinates, provides, and evaluates education specific to patient and family needs. The RN delegates tasks to licensed and non-licensed personnel, functions as a mentor or preceptor, and encourages teamwork. The RN identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement and participates in quality, safety, and service process improvement efforts. The RN promotes cost-effective care and complies with regulatory standards. The RN recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care and assesses discharge needs of individual patients and families. The RN develops relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for their patients’ needs. The RN collaborates with patient and family to prepare or update the plan of care and uses multidisciplinary resources in planning care. The RN identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in patient care planning. The RN demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems. The RN reads journals that contain studies applicable to practice and brings ideas and questions to the staff for assessment of applicability.
