Job Description


Plan and perform a variety of maintenance jobs in University buildings; most of the work involves repairs or replacements.

Education and Experience


A general knowledge of maintenance operations, building systems or trades skills equivalent to 1-2 years practical trades training or previous work experience.

At least one year additional practical experience.

Must provide own hand tools.

A valid driver's license; the ability to drive manual and automatic transmission vehicles.

Skills and Knowledge

Work will be performed in residence and dining centers. May be required to provide own transportation.

Responsibilities


Repack and replace faucets. Open plugged sinks, toilets and drains. Disassemble clean and replace traps, change belts in electrical equipment. Open stuck windows. Remove small animals (including bats) from inside and around buildings. Exercise judgment to determine when tradesmen should be called, especially in cases involving electricity, steam, gas or oil. Read diagrams to assemble furniture and equipment and occasionally work from blueprints. Re-lamp fluorescent and incandescent lights. Board up broken windows. Assist tradesmen as needed.

Physical Requirements


Standing 65% - 90% of the shift
• Frequent bending at the waist; able to bend to below the knee (50 - 80%)
• Frequent stooping and/or crouching (50% - 80% of shift)
• Frequent twisting and bending of head, neck, and torso 75 - 95%)
• Full range of arm movement (extension, twisting, and bending of arm and shoulder, reaching overhead, etc.) (50% - 95%)
• Visual and cognitive capability sufficient to read, interpret and follow diagrams and blue prints; diagnostic instruments (e.g. pH tester); troubleshoot and diagnose problems and make repairs
• Wrist and finger dexterity sufficient to use a variety of hand tools to perform tasks
• Able to handle and operate power tools (e.g. drills, circular saw, hand snake)
• Repetitive arm movement (e.g. hammering)
• May need to work on a ladder, scaffolds, bucket truck, or other elevated heights
• Able to drive vehicles with manual transmission
• Able to climb up into and down from truck cab
• Able to work in conditions of extreme heat or cold
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Push/pull up to 100 lbs.
• May be exposed to strong odors, dust, chemicals, solvents, rodents (e.g. bats,mice), fluorescent and incandescent bulbs

Tools/Equipment


Use a variety of hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, saws, etc. and some hand power tools such as drill and circular saws and hand snake.

Work from ladders, scaffolds and catwalks.

Use proper safety equipment for removal of animals.
