PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and authorized activities while operating an assigned school bus in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, District policies, safety procedures, and established routes and schedules. Responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly, and respectful environment for students while on the bus.
QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent; or in lieu of a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) with the required endorsements and a minimum of three years of professional commercial, passenger, or student transportation driving experience.
• Minimum age of 21 years.
• Possess and maintain a valid Texas CDL with the required endorsements and School Bus Certification or be able to obtain the required CDL and School Bus Certification within 90 days of employment. Employees who have not obtained the required CDL and School Bus Certification at the time of employment may not operate a school bus transporting students until all required credentials have been obtained.
• Successfully complete and pass all required written and computer-based examinations administered by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
• Successfully complete an annual physical examination and meet all applicable physical requirements for the position.
• Successfully complete and comply with all required drug and alcohol testing in accordance with applicable federal, state, and District requirements.
• Maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with District requirements.
• Successfully complete all District-required safety, operational, and school bus driver training.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, as necessary to safely operate a school bus, communicate with students and District personnel, use two-way radio communications, understand safety procedures and instructions, and complete required documentation.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

• Knowledge of safe school bus operation and applicable traffic and transportation laws and regulations.
• Knowledge of student management and behavior expectations on a school bus.
• Ability to operate and safely maneuver a school bus in a variety of traffic, weather, and road conditions.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required transportation documentation.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, campus personnel, and Transportation Department staff.
• Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations and follow established emergency procedures.
• Ability to use two-way radio, GPS, computer, and other transportation-related technology.
• Ability to learn and safely operate various District-owned school bus models and related equipment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

• Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the assigned school bus in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and District procedures; promptly report safety concerns, mechanical defects, or other deficiencies.
• Clean the exterior of the assigned school bus and maintain the vehicle in a safe and orderly condition.
• Operate the assigned school bus in a safe and efficient manner while observing all applicable traffic laws, regulations, and District procedures.
• Safely supervise students as they enter, ride, and exit the school bus.
• Verify student transportation eligibility in accordance with District procedures and report eligibility concerns to the appropriate Transportation staff.
• Complete and submit required student discipline and incident documentation.
• Review assigned routes and route sheets; report and make necessary corrections or recommendations to routing staff in accordance with Department procedures.
• Monitor and comply with applicable transportation eligibility distance requirements and report eligibility concerns to the appropriate Transportation staff.
• Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with students, parents, campus personnel, and Transportation Department staff.
• Complete required Special Trip documentation accurately and timely.
• Maintain accurate daily records of mileage driven and report mileage to the appropriate program or account in accordance with District procedures.
• Provide the Transportation Office with accurate route descriptions, mileage measurements, and updates as required.
• Assign student seating on regular education routes in accordance with Transportation Department procedures.
• Communicate effectively with students, Transportation personnel, and other District staff using two-way radio and other required communication methods.
• Respond appropriately to accidents, medical emergencies, student emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, severe weather, and other safety-related situations in accordance with District procedures.
• Promptly report accidents, injuries, student incidents, safety concerns, vehicle defects, and other required information to the appropriate Transportation personnel.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director or designee.

MENTAL DEMANDS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

• Tools/Equipment Used: Operate school bus; two-way radio; global positioning system (GPS); safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher
• Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
• Motion: Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching
• Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) on a daily basis
• Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours
• Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress

Note: In emergency situations the driver may need to lift or pull in excess of the above listing.

The AISD Transportation Department operates on the team concept. Each employee will be cross trained to perform the jobs of other staff members.

Normal work hours: 6:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (6 hrs/day) 5 days/week
