Job Title: Labor and Delivery Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: RN - L&D Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours, 36 hours per week - rotating shifts Experience: Two years of Labor & Delivery experience required License: Current RN license in state of practice required Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course required Description: The Labor and Delivery Nurse is responsible for the planning and provision of nursing care to patients and their families during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. This includes managing emergency situations and circulating for C-sections. Supervision and delegation of care responsibilities to ancillary personnel are essential, aligned with their scope of practice. The position involves performing physical and psychosocial assessments of patients, demonstrating knowledge of age and cultural differences, and providing support for fetal demise. A multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan is initiated for each patient in collaboration with healthcare team members. The nurse is expected to manage perinatal emergencies effectively, including crash C-sections, precipitous deliveries, and shoulder dystocia. During labor and delivery, the nurse will assess fetal and maternal well-being, amniotic fluid status, and vaginal bleeding while managing pain control for the laboring patient. Support for alternative pain control methods when appropriate is expected. Competence in assisting with epidural catheter placement and monitoring fetal and maternal status during and after the administration of medications is required. Patient and family education during all stages of the perinatal and postpartum periods is crucial. Methods of education should be appropriate to age, condition, culture, and learning readiness. Accurate and timely documentation of nursing care provided, including evaluation of patient responses to medications, treatments, and procedures, must be completed. The nurse will consistently perform necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks. Other job-related duties may be assigned as required. All associates are required to receive all necessary vaccinations as a condition of employment, with allowances for medical and religious exemptions. There are no weekend coverage requirements. The unit offers services in labor, postpartum, newborn care, triage, surgery, recovery, lactation services, and is designated as a baby-friendly facility.
