This role supports animal health, diagnostic testing, reproductive health, veterinary procedures, and the artificial insemination industry.The successful candidate will take pride in completing accurate, quality work, report to work reliably and on time, collaborate effectively with others, and assist wherever needed to support the department. Select Sires is willing to train a candidate who demonstrates the appropriate attitude, work ethic, dependability, and willingness to learn. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe responsibilities of the Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician include, but are not limited to:* Serve as a positive representative of the Select Sires mission and core values.* Assist veterinarians with animal examinations, treatments, vaccinations, surgeries, and other veterinary procedures.* Safely restrain and handle cattle during veterinary procedures and animal health activities.* Collect, identify, and prepare diagnostic samples for laboratory submission, including blood, preputial, and fecal samples.* Maintain inventory and order medications, vaccines, diagnostic materials, personal protective equipment, and other veterinary supplies.* Accurately prepare export documentation, embryo donor sire certificates, and other specialized customer documents.* Assist with departmental billing by coordinating veterinary service and supply charges with the Select Sires Financial Department.* Communicate effectively with teams and departments throughout the organization.* Maintain a clean, organized, sanitary, and efficient work environment.* Use Microsoft Excel and other basic computer applications to complete departmental work.* Learn and use Select Sires systems, including AS400, Fusion, Acumatica, and other department-specific software.* Follow established animal health, biosecurity, safety, and sanitation procedures.* Assist with additional departmental responsibilities and operational needs as assigned.Why This Role MattersThe Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician supports cattle health and care while contributing to Select Sires’ work in reproductive management, genetics, and agriculture. The role helps ensure that veterinary procedures, diagnostic testing, documentation, inventory, and animal health activities are performed safely, accurately, and efficiently. What Success Looks LikeA successful Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician will:* Demonstrate dependability, initiative, and a strong work ethic.* Handle cattle calmly and safely.* Complete documentation and administrative responsibilities accurately.* Follow animal health, safety, biosecurity, and sanitation protocols consistently.* Communicate effectively with veterinarians, animal care teams, and other departments.* Maintain organized supplies, records, and work areas.* Adapt to changing departmental priorities.* Show a willingness to learn new procedures, systems, and industry practices.Required Skills and AbilitiesCandidates must demonstrate:* Reliability and the ability to report to work consistently and on time.* Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.* Ability to safely work around and directly handle cattle.* Ability to follow veterinary, animal health, biosecurity, safety, and sanitation protocols.* Strong verbal and written communication skills.* Ability to work effectively and respectfully as part of a team.* Ability to work independently and take initiative when appropriate.* Willingness to assist with a variety of veterinary and departmental responsibilities.* Ability to organize supplies, documentation, and competing priorities.* Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use Microsoft Excel.* Ability and willingness to learn AS400, Fusion, Acumatica, and other department-specific systems.* Willingness to learn new veterinary, diagnostic, administrative, and industry procedures.Education and ExperienceCandidates should possess:* An associate degree or bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, animal science, agriculture, or a related field; or* Equivalent education, training, or relevant professional experience.* Previous work with cattle or other livestock.* Experience in veterinary medicine, animal health, or reproductive management.* Experience within the artificial insemination, cattle genetics, or animal breeding industry.No specific professional credential is required for this position. Select Sires is willing to train a candidate who demonstrates a strong attitude, work ethic, dependability, and willingness to learn. Physical and Work Environment RequirementsThis is a hands-on position that involves direct work with cattle.
