Job Position: Shipping Clerk

Location: KANSAS CITY, MO 64161

Pay Rate: $25.00/hr

Shift: 3rd 11pm-7am M-F plus over time as needed

Description: We are seeking an experienced and organized Shipping Clerk to lead our shipping operations. This role is responsible for coordinating and directing a team of two or more forklift operators, scheduling truck drivers' routes, and overseeing all aspects of the shipping department. Key focus areas include optimizing shipping costs, maximizing trailer utilization (MSF/Trailer), and ensuring consistently on-time deliveries to meet customer expectations.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Strictly follow all safety protocols and company policies. Report any accidents, incidents, or safety concerns immediately. Complete all assigned monthly online safety training and behavior/audit cards.

Foster a positive work environment through strong interpersonal skills, while maintaining confidentiality and building respectful working relationships with all team members.
Demonstrate excellent teamwork, flexibility, and reliability. Maintain exemplary attendance and be willing to work flexible or extended hours as needed.
Communicate effectively with all levels of staff, including schedulers, customer service teams, and colleagues, to deliver outstanding customer service.
Primarily work in an office setting while performing daily duties.
Understand and carry out instructions from supervisors.
Oversee the full shipping process: ensure orders, export containers, and bale containers are properly produced, loaded, billed, shipped, and delivered on time while meeting all customer, customs, and legal requirements.
Create efficient shipments for customer orders, balancing cost and speed. Adhere to the daily production schedule and recommend improvements to optimize cost, quality, delivery, and service.
Prepare accurate bills for all outgoing loads, manage dispatch changes, and communicate updates to carriers and customers. Ensure all scrap bales are picked up, loaded, and properly stored by the end of each shift.
Proactively contact customers regarding delivery issues or changes.

Additional Responsibilities

Pursue professional development through approved seminars, technical courses, or college programs.
Build and maintain strong relationships with freight carriers and representatives.
Process customer returns and complete all associated paperwork accurately and promptly.
Identify and communicate operational issues that may impact the Shipping Department; develop and implement solutions.
Ensure smooth handoffs between shifts by coordinating with supervisors.
Coordinate outbound orders, assign loads to trailers, maintain required documentation, and oversee proper storage of finished goods.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications

College degree or related technical training.
Four years of experience in an office setting (or minimum 2 years of relevant office experience).

Technical Skills

Strong understanding of equipment operation with the ability to train and support team members.
Solid grasp of economic and cost factors to make daily decisions that reduce expenses and identify improvement opportunities.
Ability to uphold quality standards and regulatory compliance (including OSHA, environmental, wage/hour, and company policies).
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Familiarity with shipping software/applications.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions.

Language Skills

Excellent verbal and written English communication.
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, procedures, and manuals.
Capable of writing routine reports and correspondence.
Comfortable speaking effectively with customers or groups of employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to accurately read a tape measure.
Proficiency in calculating percentages, measurements, volume, and rates.
Strong high-school level math skills.

Reasoning Ability

Apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
Solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates and Licenses

May be required to maintain a current Lift Truck Operator License.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The majority of work is performed in an office environment. Employees must regularly talk, hear, stand, walk, and sit. Vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
When on the shipping floor for work or training, exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and loud noise levels may occur.

Tools/Equipment: Steel toe shoes (provided by employee), hearing protection, safety glasses, tape measure, and radio (provided by company).
