CNC Lathe Machinist

CNC Lathe Machinist / Programmer - 1st Shift

This position combines CNC lathe machining and programming responsibilities to produce precision aerospace components using Fanuc-controlled CNC lathes. You will program, set up, and operate CNC lathes while ensuring all parts meet engineering drawings, customer requirements, work instructions, and quality management system standards. The role supports turning operations through hands-on machining, in-process inspection, documentation, and proactive communication of machining and quality concerns. Over time, the position is expected to evolve toward a stronger focus on programming for new product introductions and backlog work as additional machinists join the team.

Responsibilities

• Program, set up, and operate Fanuc-controlled CNC lathes to produce precision machined aerospace components.
• Load, verify, and run CNC programs in accordance with established procedures and work instructions.
• Install and adjust workholding, cutting tools, inserts, fixtures, and offsets as required for each job.
• Perform first-piece, in-process, and final dimensional inspections using appropriate precision measuring instruments.
• Make tool wear, offset, and minor process adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and part quality.
• Monitor machine operation, tooling condition, surface finish, and part quality throughout the manufacturing process.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and communicate machining problems, tooling issues, and nonconforming conditions to appropriate personnel.
• Recommend and support process improvement opportunities to enhance quality, efficiency, and throughput.
• Complete production records, inspection records, and other required documentation accurately and on time.
• Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T requirements to set up and machine parts correctly.
• Apply knowledge of feeds, speeds, tooling geometry, tool wear, and basic machining principles to optimize machining operations.
• Recognize and respond to machining conditions such as chatter, taper, poor surface finish, and tool failure.
• Support gear, shaft, spline, and other precision rotating component manufacturing as needed.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth handoffs between programming, setup, and operation.
• Gradually transition to a heavier focus on CNC programming for new product introductions and backlog work as additional machinists are hired.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience programming, setting up, and operating CNC lathes.
• Proven experience working with Fanuc controls on CNC lathes.
• Demonstrated ability to use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore gauges, and thread gauges.
• Experience machining alloy steel, stainless steel, carburized or heat-treated materials, or other aerospace materials.
• Mastercam programming experience for CNC lathes (must have).
• 2- or 3-axis CNC programming experience.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and GD&T requirements.
• Experience working in an AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality management system environment.
• Experience holding close tolerances in a production or aerospace machining setting.
• Strong understanding of feeds, speeds, tooling geometry, tool wear, and basic machining principles.
• Ability to recognize and respond to machining issues such as chatter, taper, poor surface finish, and tool failure.
• Experience with gear, shaft, spline, or precision rotating component manufacturing.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of San Diego, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $83200.00 - $91520.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
