Job Details Level: Experienced, Location: West End Office – Richmond, VA 23230, Position Type: Full Time, Salary Range: $24.00 – $29.00 hourly, Travel Percentage: Float between Richmond area offices, Job Shift: Day, Job Category: Healthcare, Surgical Tech Schedule: 2–3 shifts per week, approximate hours 6:30am – 2:30pm, Medical Assistant Schedule: 2–3 shifts per week, primarily 8‑hour shifts with 30‑minute lunch break, variable start times (e.g., 7:30am–4:00pm, 8:15am–4:45pm, etc.). Summary Our surgical technologists/medical assistants assist VWC physicians with surgical procedures, patient exams, tests, and procedures. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Surgical Technologist Prepare and organize in‑office surgery room equipment, instruments, and supplies for various surgical procedures. Anticipate surgeon and patient needs during a procedure; provide surgeon with necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment. Process specimens, prepare, check, and monitor medications, and assist with dressings. Set up a sterile and sanitary environment and maintain the sterile field for the patient during procedures. Participate in stocking and restocking medical supplies. Inspect, replace, and sterilize medical instruments. Medical Assistant Greets and prepares patients for examinations and assists provider. Instructs patients in the collection of urine specimens, as needed. Prepares exam rooms, instruments, and gowns per appointment type. Prepares equipment & aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients. Performs NSTs as ordered; file strips per protocol. Demonstrates efficient navigation of Electronic Medical Record and pertinent electronic applications. Obtains vital signs & history; records data in patients electronic chart. Prepares lab requisitions, prints labels, and verifies patient identity by name and DOB for all labs. Administers injections per protocol. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment. Stocks clinical supplies in the exam rooms and nurses stations daily. Facilitates the efficient flow of patients. Attends required meetings. Complies with Virginia Women’s Center policies and procedures; follows guidelines required by HIPAA, OSHA, and Red Flags regulations; maintains appropriate attendance and punctuality as defined by policy. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education, Experience, and/or Licensure High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Credential/certification as a surgical technologist from an accredited institution or training program. Certified Surgical Technologist license from the State of Virginia. Minimum one‑year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies in the operating room. Knowledge of VWC’s computer system software and its functionality as it pertains to patient care. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care. Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to Ob/Gyn specialty. Knowledge of OSHA guidelines. Skill in preparing and maintaining records. Skill in maintaining departmental quality assurance and quality control standards. Skill in performing assistance tasks appropriately. Skill in tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions. Skill in using proper body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and memos. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to type 30 words per minute. Ability to maintain strictest patient confidentiality. Ability to communicate with patient to ascertain needs (requires independent judgment for assessing patient needs for appropriate preparation for exam). Ability to obtain vital signs and monitor fetal heart and contractions. Ability to demonstrate accuracy and efficiency in recording information in patients charts and in labeling specimens. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to respond with flexibility to changing workload or patient assignments. Ability to perform effectively as a team member, supporting a patient‑focused environment in all interactions with patients, families, visitors, and volunteers. Physical Demands Varied activities including sitting, walking, stooping, lifting, bending, and reaching; exhibits full body motion, handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye‑hand coordination; must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and lift 50 pounds; use various office equipment including phone, writing instruments, keyboard, fax, and medical equipment such as stethoscope, scales, and blood‑pressure cuff; requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Work Environment Combination of medical office, in‑office surgical suite, and exam/procedure room settings. Potential exposure to hazards/blood‑borne pathogens.
