Position SummaryAquila Corporation is seeking an experienced Fiber MDU Installation & Splicing Technician to perform fiber construction and installation within multi-dwelling unit (MDU) properties, including apartments, condominiums, townhomes, mixed-use buildings, and similar multi-unit facilities. This position is responsible for pre-wire and post-wire fiber installation, fiber splicing, equipment installation and setup, testing, troubleshooting, labeling, documentation, and project closeout.
Primary ResponsibilitiesMDU Pre-Wire• Review and interpret MDU construction prints, floor plans, fiber diagrams, riser diagrams, and installation specifications.
• Walk buildings and verify proposed fiber routes before installation.
• Identify telecom rooms, MDFs/IDFs, risers, pathways, unit locations, equipment locations, and fiber distribution points.
• Install and route fiber through walls, ceilings, attics, basements, crawlspaces, risers, hallways, and designated pathways.
• Install conduit, innerduct, raceway, microduct, J-hooks, cable supports, and other pathway systems when required.
• Maintain proper bend radius and pulling tension; secure and protect fiber throughout the building.
• Leave appropriate service loops/slack at termination and equipment locations.
• Firestop penetrations as required and label cables, pathways, floors, units, terminals, and equipment locations.
• Coordinate around other trades and maintain clean, organized, professional cable routing.
MDU Post-Wire• Complete fiber installation in finished or occupied buildings.
• Route fiber from building distribution locations to individual units.
• Install hallway, riser, surface-mount, concealed, and raceway pathways as required.
• Perform wall penetrations while minimizing impact to finished surfaces.
• Route and secure fiber neatly inside individual units.
• Install subscriber/service-drop fiber from the assigned terminal to the designated equipment location.
• Seal penetrations, protect property finishes, and restore/clean all work areas.
Fiber Splicing & Termination• Prepare fiber-optic cable and perform fusion splicing.
• Perform single-fiber and/or ribbon splicing when required.
• Install and organize splice trays; prepare and seal splice closures.
• Splice feeder, distribution, riser, and service fibers.
• Terminate fiber connectors when required.
• Maintain correct fiber assignments and color codes.
• Label fibers, ports, terminals, and splice locations; maintain accurate splice documentation.
• Troubleshoot poor or failed splices.
Equipment Installation & Setup• Install fiber distribution equipment within MDFs, IDFs, telecom rooms, and common areas.
• Install fiber distribution panels, enclosures, terminals, cabinets, splitters, patch panels, and fiber-management hardware as specified.
• Install ONTs and related subscriber equipment when required.
• Install mounting boards, brackets, racks, and equipment supports.
• Route, dress, secure, and label fiber patch cords while maintaining proper fiber management and service loops.
• Verify equipment is securely mounted and installed according to project specifications.
• Connect power and low-voltage equipment when within authorized scope and assist with activation/provisioning when required.
Testing & Troubleshooting• Perform OTDR and optical power-meter testing when required.
• Use visual fault locators and fiber identification equipment.
• Verify continuity and correct fiber assignments.
• Identify excessive loss, damaged fiber, macro-bends, failed splices, dirty connectors, and other optical issues.
• Clean and inspect connectors before connection.
• Troubleshoot fiber from building entrance through distribution systems and individual units.
• Correct deficiencies and document test results before turnover.
Print Reading, As-Builts & Closeout• Read construction prints, MDU floor plans, routing plans, riser diagrams, splice diagrams, fiber assignments, equipment layouts, and unit addressing plans.
• Redline changes made during construction and record actual cable routes and installed footage.
• Document terminal, enclosure, splitter, equipment, fiber, and port assignments.
• Complete accurate as-built documentation.
• Take required pre-work, progress, and completion photographs.
• Maintain production records, testing/splice documentation, and project closeout records.
Required Tools & Equipment Knowledge• Fusion splicer, precision cleaver, fiber strippers, cable preparation tools, and fiber cleaning equipment.
• OTDR, optical power meter, visual fault locator, fiber identifier, and fiber inspection scope.
• Fish tapes, duct rods, pulling rope/mule tape, cable rollers, and pulling equipment.
• Conduit/raceway installation tools, hammer drills, rotary hammers, cordless drills/impact drivers, and wall-penetration tools.
• Ladders, labeling equipment, measuring equipment, and standard hand/power tools.
Safety & Property Protection• Follow all company and project safety requirements and wear required PPE.
• Use ladders and elevated work equipment safely and maintain safe work areas in occupied buildings.
• Use signage and barriers when working in common areas.
• Identify electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire-protection, and other building systems before drilling or penetrating walls.
• Maintain required firestopping at penetrations.
• Protect finished surfaces, resident/property-owner belongings, and common areas.
• Control tools, materials, fiber scraps, and debris and leave every work area clean and professional.
Required Qualifications• Previous fiber-optic installation or telecommunications experience.
• MDU, commercial, or structured-cabling experience preferred.
• Ability to perform fiber splicing and testing.
• Ability to read and interpret construction prints and fiber diagrams.
• Understanding of fiber color codes and assignments.
• Strong troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a crew.
• Professional appearance and ability to work respectfully inside occupied residential properties.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
• Ability to lift, carry, climb ladders, work overhead, and perform the physical requirements of telecommunications construction.
