General Surgeon Position Overview

As a General Surgeon at Vernon Health, you will provide comprehensive surgical care for patients in Viroqua, Vernon County, and the surrounding Driftless Region. You will work within a reputable critical access hospital and trauma program, supporting both inpatient and outpatient surgical needs. The role includes an active outpatient practice, opportunities to perform procedures in rural health clinic settings, shared general surgery call, and collaboration with primary care, emergency medicine, GI, orthopedics, nursing, anesthesia, rehabilitation, and other members of the patient care team.

Vernon Health’s surgical environment includes four state-of-the-art surgical suites supporting GI, orthopedic, and general surgery practices, along with a fully renovated emergency room and urgent care space designed with private patient rooms and a calming, therapeutic environment.

General Surgeon Key Responsibilities

1. Provide evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management for a broad range of general surgery conditions.
2. Perform general surgery procedures in modern surgical suites supporting inpatient, outpatient, and specialty surgical services.
3. Support an active outpatient surgical practice, including procedures performed in rural health clinic settings when appropriate.
4. Participate in shared general surgery call within Vernon Health’s critical access hospital and trauma program.
5. Collaborate with primary care providers, emergency medicine, anesthesia, GI, orthopedics, nursing, rehabilitation services, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team.
6. Contribute to high-quality, patient-centered care experiences aligned with Vernon Health’s mission, vision, values, and commitment to exceptional care close to home.
7. Maintain accurate and timely medical records using Epic EMR and in compliance with Vernon Health standards.

General Surgeon Qualifications

1. MD or DO degree from an accredited institution and completion of an accredited General Surgery residency program.
2. Valid Wisconsin medical license or ability to obtain.
3. Board certification or board eligibility in General Surgery.
4. Demonstrated clinical judgment, surgical skill, and commitment to quality and patient safety.
5. Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
6. Interest in rural healthcare, community-based medicine, and collaborative surgical practice.
