This is a Non-Classified position. Incumbents in this position are expected to work part-time work schedules.

General Purpose

Under the general supervision of District administrators, a school principal, or a designated staff member, an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Tutor works in temporary, part time position assisting and tutoring students on a variety of academic subjects, with the objective of improving students' performance in the assigned academic subjects.

Distinguishing Characteristics

An AVID Tutor is distinguished from Instructional Assistant in that an AVID Tutor applies AVID-based strategies to enhance academic performance of assigned students within the AVID program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Assists with the preparation, reinforcement, and presentation of materials related to the instructional programs in the following subject areas: mathematics, English, foreign language, social science and/or sciences.
• Conducts mini-lessons in the process of writing in multiple subjects, study skills, and other academic aspects.
• Provides students with individualized or small group instruction to supplement teacher presentations.
• Provides academic support to assigned students.
• Reports students' progress to specified staff.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other duties:

• Reports absences and tardiness to specified staff.
• Encourages students to continue their education, and pursue post-secondary education.
• Distributes and collects textbooks, test booklets, learning packets and other instructional materials.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Instruction delivery methods.
• Effective communication methods, in both writing and orally.
• Core AVID curriculum, including WICOR, Cornell note taking and Socratic seminars.
• Assigned academic subjects, including mathematics and language subjects.
• Elementary and Secondary school environment.
• AVID program goals and objectives.

Ability to:

• Serve as a role model for students.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Apply basic tutoring methods.
• Teach specific strategies for critical thinking and higher-level inquiry.
• Provide meaningful and motivating professional development.
• Follow assigned course plan.
• Use computers and other equipment related to assigned tasks.
• Effectively organize and prioritize workload.
• Write clear, concise reports, lesson plans and other materials.
• Deliver oral presentations in a logical and persuasive manner.
• Dress appropriately in accordance with the work environment.
• Work effectively with others.

Education, Training, and Experience:

• Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalent, or higher, and
• Proof of completion of at least 12 college semester units OR proof of current enrollment as a full-time (12 semester unit minimum) college student.

Education Provision: Applicants who show proof of a higher degree (Associate's, Bachelor's, etc.) in addition to their high school diploma will be deemed qualified, regardless of if they are not currently enrolled as a full-time college student.

Physical and Mental Demands:

• Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl.
• Perform light physical exertion.
• Lift and carry 15 pounds.
• Reach in all directions.
• Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
• Work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
• Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures
