Automation Controls Engineer

The Automation Controls Engineer will lead and support the design, implementation, and optimization of electrical and control systems across the facility. This role provides hands-on automation and maintenance support to all departments while driving capital and strategic initiatives focused on process reliability, environmental compliance, and electrical system performance. The engineer will also implement and leverage process control tools to maintain system stability, reduce variability, and align with CertainTeed’s Principles.-
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:--
Develop and commission plant automation systems, including PLCs, HMI/SCADA, MES data collection, and IIoT networks. Execute retrofit projects with AC/servo drives and control system upgrades aligned with the corporate modernization strategy.
Direct contractors, third-party controls, engineering partners, and suppliers.
Prepare, schedule, coordinate, monitor, and provide status for all assigned projects.
Perform all aspects of project management and design engineering for those projects.
Develop Scopes of Work and estimates for potential projects.
Monitor compliance in all areas, maintain quality control in every area (budget, scheduling, planning, expediting, receiving, AR/AP) throughout the project lifecycle.
Collaborate with the plant Production and Engineering Managers to coordinate changes in the production process and resolve equipment malfunctions.
Develop/Enforce Process Controls Standards, Design/Specify Controls System architectures.
Support process engineers in process optimization tasks, problem analysis, solution development, and implementation of corrective actions.
Leads and participates in Focus Improvement teams to resolve critical process and production problems with customers and vendors.
Will lead a team of technicians through troubleshooting and root cause analysis activities.
Analyzes operating problems, develops solutions, and leads with implementation of corrective action.
Review relevant production data to accurately interpret and identify the various opportunities at the production level and to immediately take steps to improve efficiency.
Maintain electrical equipment to meet regulatory codes at the state and federal levels.
Be reachable and available for after-hours support in emergency downtime situations.
Report all EH&S incidents – Injuries/Recordables, Near Misses, First Aid, Environmental and Property/Equipment Damage.
Conduct weekly SMAT Audits or any other requirements as requested by the Manager.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor of Science in Engineering is required (Electrical Engineering is preferred)
Minimum of 3 years working within a Controls & Automation Engineering role in continuous process manufacturing plants, or similar
“Hands-On” problem solver capable of providing on-site and remote support to multiple plants to solve complex automation related issues and any difficult troubleshooting issues
Programming of Allen Bradley PLCs (ControlLogix) is required.
HMI Development is required, preferably within Ignition or Wonderware platforms.
Familiarity with National Electric Code NEC, Arc Flash (NFPA-70), Combustion Safety (NFPA-86), Standard for Fluid Heaters (NFPA-87)
Familiarity with industrial networking is required (TCP/IP, Modbus, Modbus TCP, HART)
Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming is required (Add-On Instructions, User Defined Tags)
Familiarity with Design/Specification of Process Control Panels
Familiarity with standard instrumentation (4-20 ma / 1-5V) is required (flowmeters, pressure transmitters, temperature measurements, proximity and limit switches, level sensors, encoders, linear and I/P transducers)
Experience with medium (120V/480V) and low voltage electrical distribution and Motor Control Center (MCC)
Good experience with motor controls equipment (VFD, DOL, Soft Start, Electronic Overload)
Ability to utilize AutoCAD drafting tools to create and modify drawings is required.
Familiarity with Project Management Practices is preferred
