Position Duties The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Amusement Park Supervisor vacancy in the Parks Division. Salary range for this classification is $99,481.20 – $120,884.40 This salary range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience. Under the direction of the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ) Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Supervisor, the Amusement Park Supervisor performs work of moderate difficulty, with responsibility for the operations of an amusement park operated year-round and utilized by San José and Bay Area Residents. This is a highly visible City-wide facility and program with a focus on overseeing the amusement park operations at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, including oversight of ride operations and safety; oversight of Guest Services including membership service, customer service, ride maintenance, volunteers, group sales, and special events. This position works 1 weekend day and some holidays. Typical duties of the Amusement Park Supervisor include but are not limited to: Directs, reviews, and approves the development, operation, revenue collection and expenditures for membership, admissions, group sales, parking, customer service, ride operations, office, and special activities. Initiates, establishes and implements policies and procedures as they relate to amusement park operations. Prepares reports, evaluations, memorandums, and correspondence as required Initiates, maintains, and develops effective working relationships with ground maintenance, park rangers, zoo staff, nonprofit support organizations, volunteers, and Community/School groups to foster good relations and encourage co-sponsorship activities and events. Directs, monitors, and approves expenditures as allocated in the budget. Identifies and analyzes the service needs for a large geographic area with diverse communities and income levels. Prepares and implements part-time staff budgets for amusement park programs. Recommend and help develop operating budget revenue projections and expenditures and monitors spending for personal and non-personal services. Supervises and assigns full-time and part-time staff, plans and coordinates training. Creates work schedules and monitors work performance. Recommends employment, retention, promotion, demotion, and completes performance evaluations. Works with other co-workers, department staff and City departments to insure safe visitor and staff conditions. Employs staff and coordinates the repair of playgrounds, and rides. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: Completion of 60 semester units/90 quarter units from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Social Science, Recreation and Leisure studies, or closely related field AND four (4) years of experience supervising the operations of a public or private concessions or a regional park or an amusement operations facility. Acceptable Substitution: A Bachelor’s degree in in Business Administration, Social Science, Recreation and Leisure studies, or closely related field from an accredited college or university, may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the Required Experience. Required Licensing (such as driver’s license, certifications, etc.) Possession of an AIMS International Associate Ride Inspector Certification - Level 1 is highly desirable. As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of valid State of California Class A or B driver’s license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties. Project Management Ensures support for projects and implements agency goals and strategic objectives. Supervision Sets effective long and short‑term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources; provides motivational support; empowers others; assigns decision-making and work functions to others in an appropriate manner to maximize organizational and individual effectiveness. Communication Skills: Communicates and listens effectively and responds in a timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate, complete, current; well‑organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper grammatical form responds to statements and comments of others in a way that reflects understanding of the content and the accompanying emotion; asks clarifying questions to assure understanding of what the speaker intended, ensures consistent communication takes place within area of responsibility.
