Job Title: Senior Data Engineer/SQL DBA/SSIS Developer



Location: Sacramento, CA (Onsite)

Industry Experience: Public-sector experience required

Experience Required: 13-20+ years preferred

Position Overview :

Client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Data Engineer/SQL DBA/SSIS Developer to support enterprise database, data warehouse, ETL, and data-integration initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring approximately 15-20+ years of hands-on experience designing, developing, administering, supporting, and modernizing enterprise database and data warehouse environments. The position requires deep Microsoft SQL Server expertise, strong SSIS/ETL development experience, data modeling, database performance optimization, high availability and disaster recovery, and experience supporting complex production systems. Strong experience delivering data solutions for public-sector organizations, including state government, transportation, transit, or other government agencies , is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities :

• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise SQL Server databases, data warehouses, data marts, and supporting data structures.
• Develop logical and physical data models supporting transactional, reporting, and analytical applications.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain complex SSIS ETL solutions.
• Integrate data from heterogeneous sources including SQL Server, Oracle, CSV/flat files, Excel, APIs/web services, operational systems, and external data sources.
• Develop data cleansing, transformation, validation, and business-rule processing within ETL pipelines.
• Support database environments across development, test/UAT, and production.
• Perform SQL Server installation, configuration, administration, troubleshooting, and production support.
• Conduct database performance analysis, query optimization, indexing, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
• Design and support database backup, recovery, disaster-recovery, replication, and high-availability solutions.
• Implement and support database security, permissions, auditing, and access controls.
• Develop and maintain database objects including tables, views, stored procedures, functions, schemas, and indexes.
• Support data warehouse architectures using dimensional modeling and Kimball methodology.
• Perform database and ETL code reviews and support-controlled code promotion between environments.
• Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into data models, database designs, and integration solutions.
• Create technical documentation including data dictionaries, entity-relationship diagrams, architecture diagrams, database designs, and ETL documentation.
• Perform upstream and downstream impact analysis for application, database, and interface changes.
• Collaborate with application developers, architects, business analysts, reporting teams, QA staff, and project managers.
• Support database modernization and migration initiatives involving on-premises and cloud environments.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to other data engineering and development team members.

Required Qualifications :

• 20+ years of professional experience in database engineering, SQL Server database administration, data engineering, data warehousing, ETL, or closely related disciplines.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
• Extensive experience designing, developing, deploying, and supporting SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) solutions.
• Strong experience with:
  • SQL and stored procedures.
  • Logical and physical data modeling.
  • Data warehouse and data mart development.
  • Dimensional modeling.
  • ETL architecture and development.
  • Database performance tuning.
  • Backup and recovery.
  • Database security.
  • Production support.
• Experience integrating data from multiple heterogeneous enterprise systems.
• Experience supporting development, UAT/test, and production database environments.
• Experience designing and maintaining highly available and recoverable database environments.
• Experience reviewing database architecture and recommending technical solutions.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and performance-optimization skills.

Public-Sector Experience: Candidates should have demonstrated experience supporting government or public-sector technology environments .

Highly Desirable Experience Includes Projects Involving :

• Public sector such as transportation, transit, agriculture, or Health & Human services agencies.
• State government agencies.
• Ports, seaports, or transportation authorities.
• Government data warehouses and enterprise reporting environments.
• Public-sector operational and transactional systems.
