GROCERY/ASST DEPT LEADER

Assist the Department Manager in planning, organizing, staffing, training and directing Grocery Department associates; perform production and customer service functions; maximize store sales and profits safely and ethically in accordance with policies and procedures. Location: Portland, Oregon. Responsibilities Assist the Department Manager in organizing work, filling department staffing needs, and training and scheduling associates to ensure prompt courteous service. Respond promptly in a tactful and professional manner to customer or associate complaints, requests, accidents, and questions. Use Computer Assisted Ordering (CAO) to manage ordering merchandise and supplies, ensure proper accounting and inventory balance during the Department Manager’s absence. Price and display merchandise, maintain signage, product rotation, freshness, quantity, quality and proper space allocation. Counsel associates in effective merchandising techniques, customer services and promotional activities. Follow company programs and policies regarding dress code, grooming, sanitation and a harassment‑free environment. Provide input to the Department Manager on budgets, goals and results. Communicate and interact with associates and customers to create a positive impression. Maintain equipment, facilities, floor, shelf and grocery areas to sanitary standards. Promote, communicate and implement company initiatives and process improvements to direct reports. Demonstrate aptitude to manage people and organize workloads. Perform any and all duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Willingness to work flexible hours including mornings, afternoons, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required. Effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to make intelligent decisions quickly. Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and make positive impressions on associates and customers. Skills for effective production, merchandising and customer service related to merchandise sales. Understanding of all key components of department operations (managing people, merchandising, CAO, inventory, shrink control, customer service, labor scheduling, expense control, etc.). Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations including employment practices and OSHA compliance. Qualified to operate power machinery and use tools such as power jacks, box cutters, label guns, balers, compactors, etc. Desired Qualifications Grocery retail work experience or backup manager experience.
