Food Service WorkerPlays a crucial role in supporting the preparation and serving of nutritious and appealing meals to students. The role combines various tasks, including food preparation, serving, cashiering, and maintaining a clean and organized cafeteria and kitchen. The FSW will promote healthy eating and support a service-friendly, team, and welcoming environment.Qualifications:High school diploma or general education degree (GED)One to two years of related experienceServe Safe food handlers certification or the ability to obtainSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriateRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to work effectively with othersAbility to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writingEffective, active listening skillsOrganizational and problem-solving skillsThorough understanding of friendly customer serviceAbility to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings, and labelsAbility to operate a point of sale system and other related computer equipmentBasic math/bookkeeping skillsSuch alternatives to the above knowledge, skills, and abilities as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriateEssential Functions:Ensure the safety of studentsFoster and maintain a positive, welcoming, and respectful environment in the cafeteriaAssist in the preparation of menu items and/or the fruit and vegetable barEnsure compliance with health and safety regulationsFill milk, condiments, fruit/veggie bar, etc., as neededPrepare the point of sale system before lunch starts and operate the POS during serviceEnsure the correct identity of the student via name and picture once they enter their IDAccurately enter the student's meal selections into the POSHandle cash transactions, process meal payments, and provide accurate change per policy. Record all transactions on the POSKeep cash handling procedures in accordance with district policyPrepare deposit per district policy and procedureEnsure all signs posted accurately reflect the current menu and pricingEnsure that appropriate paperwork is available at the point of sale systemMaintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., free and reduced lunch studentsInteract in a positive manner with staff, students, and parentsAssist the cook if time allowsAttend meetings and complete online in-services as requiredHelp restock a la carte items, fruit/veggies, condiments, silverware etcAssist in cleaning, cooking, and serving areas as well as washing and putting away any dishes or pots and pans, following proper cleaning and sanitizing protocolsPromote good public relationsServe as a role model for students by demonstrating positive behavior, attitude, and valuesEngage with students in a positive manner, promoting a healthy attitude towards food and nutritionOther Duties and Responsibilities:Follows district attendance and timesheet/time clock proceduresRespond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate mannerAbility to work as a team and assist the department as neededAbility to organize and maintain lunch count when the point of sale system is not workingPerform other duties as assigned by the Nutritional Service SupervisorServe as a role model for the DistrictEquipment Operated:Point of sale computer systemCalculatorCopy machinePencil and paperOther equipment as needed to perform job functionsAdditional Working Conditions:Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissueOccasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditionsOccasional interaction with unruly adults and childrenOccasional requirement to travelFrequent exposure to loud noisesFrequent requirement to stand, walk, talk, hear, see (color vision required), read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and armsFrequent requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull up to a maximum of 50 poundsFrequent excessive standing during the assigned workdayFrequent repetitive hand motionsOccasional requirement to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouchEmployee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance use in the workplace throughout his/her employment with the DistrictThis job description is subject to change and in no manner states or implies that these are the only duties and responsibilities to be performed by the incumbent.
