Job Req ID : 913 Division: Intern/Recruitment Operations Salary Range : $19.47 to $22.75 Job Type : Unclassified Business Area : City Attorney Personnel Area : City Attorney Closing Date : 07/31/2026 Communications Intern The purpose of the internship is to provide experience communicating the work of the City Attorney’s Office to internal and external audiences through social media, newsletters, and other public outreach efforts. The Communications Intern will assist the office with both internal and external communications. Primary duties include helping draft and edit social media captions, the internal monthly newsletter, and the external City Attorney’s Brief newsletter. The intern will work closely with the Communications Manager to implement social media ideas, create Reels and short videos, take photos, and explore new ways to engage the public in the work of the City Attorney’s Office. Additional responsibilities may include organizing content, updating communication materials, and supporting other office projects as needed. The Communications Intern will also support the Chief of Staff with state-level government affairs projects, including tracking state legislation supported by the Office and drafting support letters. By the end of the internship, the Communications Intern will gain hands‑on experience in communications and develop practical skills in writing, social media, and digital engagement. Internship Learning Goals Within the first month, learn the office’s writing style and tone by drafting at least three social media posts or newsletter items with minimal edits. By the midpoint of the internship, assist in planning and implementing at least one short social media campaign or series (such as a Reel or awareness post) and track engagement metrics to measure impact. Contribute to at least one edition of the internal monthly newsletter and one issue of the City Attorney’s Brief external newsletter. By the end of the internship, create a small portfolio (4–6 pieces) showcasing completed work and summarize key skills gained in writing, content creation, and public communication. Overview The City of San Diego consists of more than 30 operational departments. Internships are available when project-based opportunities arise amongst departments. With general supervision, an internship provides part‑time employment opportunities for students enrolled in a continuing education, traditional education, or training program to gain hands‑on experience related to their career interests or area of study. Example Of Duties Duties and responsibilities assigned to interns will vary depending on the department they are assigned; these include but are not limited to: assisting with planning events, conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, assisting with projects, preparing reports and presentations, attending internal and external stakeholders’ meetings, and field work. Work will be project-based, temporary, and not compromise the work of a bargaining unit employee. Minimum Requirements 15 ½ years of age or older. Must be a United States citizen or have the current legal right to work in the United States. Requirements vary and are based on the department and specific internship role. Must be enrolled in a continuing education, traditional education, or training program. Must meet grant criteria for funding. Compensation & Benefits Internships may be paid or unpaid, based on availability of funds. Paid internships will be compensated at an hourly rate consistent with Exhibit C of the Salary Ordinance and commensurate with an applicant’s education level. Not eligible to receive paid vacation leave, paid holidays, and/or any type of City-sponsored insurance. Will participate in the City’s Defined Benefit Plan administered by the San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System (SDCERS). Will receive a free transit pass (including MTS Trolley, MTS Bus, and all Rapid and Rapid Express bus services).
