Assistant Football Coach

Responsibilities Organize and supervise a total sports program. Have prior successful coaching experience in football. Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport. Continuously examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions. Reports To The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. Job Goal To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. General The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility, and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health. The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment. Duties And Responsibilities Have a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education and implement them. Know existing system, state and league regulations; implement consistently and interpret for staff. Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through the proper channels; be aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance. Staff Responsibilities Perform such other duties which may be assigned by the athletic director or principal. Administrative Duties Assist the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournaments and special sport events. Assist in preparing scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times; coordinate program with maintenance and school employees. Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility. Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method or procedural changes. Student Responsibilities Serve as a mentor to each athlete to promote character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct. Provide assistance, guidance and safeguards while traveling and at all practices and games. Provide training rules and any unique regulations of the sport to each athlete. Communicate and follow programs concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies. Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit within 24 hours. Assist and direct student managers, assistants and statisticians. Assist in determining discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when enforcement of discipline is necessary and contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection. Finance and Equipment Participate in budgeting with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season; recommend equipment guidelines. Responsible for operating within budget appropriations. Accountable for all equipment and collect cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arrange issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submit annual inventory and current records. Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing. Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorize who may enter, issue or requisition equipment. Permit athletes to be in authorized areas at appropriate times. Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking cleanliness; responsible for maintenance of specific sport equipment. Secure all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty. Instill respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use. Public Relations Promote the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program. Promote the sport outside the school through little league programs or other feasible means. Responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media. Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans. Conduct Each staff member shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance and abuse of any prescribed controlled substance in the workplace during employment. Values Each staff member shall serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens, responsible and intelligent human beings. Each staff member has a moral responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
