Description Job Title: Automotive Mechanic (Track Equipment Maintainer) Last Date of Posting: Open Until Filled Authority: TA | Department: Subways | Division/Unit: Track | Reports to: Supervisor | Work Location: Various | Hours of Work: Various To obtain permanent civil service status, you must pass the next Civil Service Exam and be hired from the resulting list for this title. Compensation The current minimum salary is $3,716 per hour for a 40‑hour work week, increasing to $43.72 per hour in the sixth year of service. Benefits include night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a comprehensive medical plan, and a pension plan. Responsibilities Inspect, test, maintain, alter, repair, and operate electromechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of railroad track. Maintain, repair, and operate cranes, tampers, compressors, front‑end loaders, engines and motors, rail saws, chain saws, payloaders, forklifts, conveyors, track lubricators, ballast regulators, snow blowers, grease pumps, and machine shop equipment. Drive trucks, keep records, make computations, prepare reports, and perform related work. Physical activities include crawling under trucks and heavy equipment, working in confined spaces, on subway and elevated tracks, lifting heavy tools, taking precise measurements, distinguishing colors, removing and installing parts and bolts in confined areas, moving out of the way of moving vehicles and heavy equipment (including trains while in service), hearing warnings (verbal, horns, bells, signals), and working outdoors in all weather conditions. Education and Experience Requirements Completion of a four‑year full‑time apprenticeship in an electro‑mechanical trade recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor, or any state apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor; or Two years of full‑time satisfactory journey‑level mechanic experience with heavy equipment used for track maintenance (e.g., compressors, drills, pile drivers, payloaders, tractors, conveyors) or transportation vehicles (e.g., passenger automobiles, trucks, buses, marine vessels, aircraft). This experience must be preceded by one of the following: Two years of experience as a mechanic’s helper, apprentice, or trainee performing or assisting in the responsibilities above; or Graduation from a recognized trade school or technical school with a major in a mechanical or electrical trade or a closely related field, totaling 600 hours; or Graduation from a vocational high school with a major in a mechanical or electrical trade or a closely related field; or An A.A.S. degree or higher in electro‑mechanical or electronic technology, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university. Part‑time experience may be credited on a prorated basis. Acceptable Experience Examples Maintenance and repair of pneumatic and hydraulic compressors, drills, pile drivers, payloaders, tractors, conveyors, gasoline and diesel engines, and transportation vehicles such as passenger automobiles, trucks, buses, marine vessels, or aircraft. Unacceptable Experience Examples Auto body and fender repair; auto or truck assembly; dealership make‑ready repair; fuel, oil and lube servicing; vehicle inspection; specialty replacement shop work such as tire replacement, exhaust parts, glass, climate control parts; salvage and junkyard extraction; large vehicle repair without engine, electrical, or hydraulic work; vehicle or equipment assembly or junkyard work; parts supply; vehicle or heavy equipment body work. Requirements to be Appointed Driver License Requirement Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in New York State with hazardous materials endorsement and no disqualifying restrictions; or Valid Motor Vehicle Driver License with a Learner Permit for a Class B CDL and hazardous materials endorsement. For those qualifying under item 2, appointment requires receipt of a valid Class B CDL with hazardous materials endorsement within six months. Maintaining the Class B CDL with hazardous materials endorsement is mandatory for the duration of employment. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driving Experience (Military or National Guard) Eligible members may be eligible for a waiver of the New York State commercial driving skills test. Applicants must apply for the waiver through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Drug Screening Requirement You must pass a drug screening to be appointed and will be subject to random drug and alcohol tests during employment. A positive result or refusal requires completion of the Substance Abuse Professional evaluation and treatment per federal law. Residency New York City residency is not required. English Requirement You must be able to understand and be understood in English to perform duties.
