Aviation CNC Machinist II
This role involves setting up and operating conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines to produce precision metal components to very close tolerances and exacting dimensions. You will work in a climate-controlled, well-organized machine shop on either first or second shift, performing complex machining operations, interpreting detailed blueprints and specifications, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the fabrication process.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines, including mills, lathes, chuckers, honing machines, and both horizontal and vertical milling centers, to produce metal parts to very close tolerances and exact dimensions.
- Perform complex manual operations such as trimming parts, polishing surfaces, removing scratches and pits, and bending metal parts to precise tolerances and dimensions.
- Carry out turning, boring, threading, and facing operations on sheet metal pieces, castings, forgings, bar stock, and plate stock.
- Interpret complicated blueprints, sketches, specifications, and GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) to ensure accurate part production.
- Solve machining problems related to work holding arrangements, unusual materials, machine settings, tooling, product specifications, and fabrication methods for production processes.
- Determine the sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and appropriate methods of setup for each job.
- Select, mount, and align specialized machine attachments and standard or improvised tooling to support efficient and accurate machining.
- Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or workpieces to guide machining operations.
- Calculate and set machine controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth or angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control programs.
- Use a variety of machinists' hand tools and precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and ensure compliance with specifications.
- Perform first piece inspection and verify quality in accordance with standard operating procedures, including first article inspection and program check-out.
- Make minor modifications to NC/CNC equipment programs as needed to optimize machining processes and prevent machine crashes.
- Read and understand G-code at a basic level and adjust or calculate tool radius and offsets as required.
- Perform set-ups and tool changes efficiently, including on Haas mills and Tsugami horizontal milling centers with FANUC controls.
- Apply knowledge of tooling, including various types of end mills, drills, and slab mills, to select appropriate tools and cutting parameters.
- Utilize conventional machining equipment, such as a manual Bridgeport mill and lathe, when needed to support production or improve understanding of machine behavior.
- Follow all safety regulations and exercise care in handling parts and operating machinery to maintain a safe work environment.
- Participate in cell or fabrication projects and assist with process improvements, methods, solutions, and procedures to enhance program quality, cost, and scheduling.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and care for company-provided tools and measuring instruments.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of machining experience, including set-up and operation of CNC and conventional equipment.
- Hands-on experience with horizontal and vertical milling centers, including set-ups and tool changes.
- Experience with Haas mills and Tsugami horizontal milling centers, particularly with FANUC controls.
- Ability to perform first article inspections and program check-outs to verify accuracy and quality.
- Basic ability to read and interpret G-code and make necessary adjustments, including calculating and changing tool radius and offsets.
- Understanding of tooling, including various types of end mills, drills, and slab mills, and their appropriate applications.
- Ability to interpret complicated blueprints, sketches, specifications, and GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing).
- Proficiency with precision measurement and quality control using machinists' hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to determine sequences of operations, number of cuts, and methods of setup with minimal supervision.
- Capability to calculate and set machining parameters such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth or angle of cut.
- Knowledge of elementary geometry, algebra, and trigonometric principles to support accurate measurement and layout.
- Ability to make minor modifications to NC/CNC programs and use a personal computer for related input and adjustments.
- Experience with CNC set-up and operation on vertical and horizontal mills and familiarity with manual Bridgeport mill and lathe.
- High school diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Completion of a 2-year technical or vocational program in machining or a related field is preferred.
- Two to three years of applied training in a specialized machining occupation is preferred.
- Conventional machining experience, particularly on manual mills and lathes, to deepen understanding of machine behavior.
- Strong problem-solving skills related to work holding, unusual materials, and complex machining setups.
- Comfort working in a deadline-intensive, production-focused environment with overtime as needed.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precision components.
- Ability to collaborate on cell or fabrication projects and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
