Job Title Phlebotomist III – Salmon Creek This Phlebotomist III role focuses on providing high-quality, patient-centered blood collection services within a hospital setting in Vancouver, WA. You will perform venipuncture and specimen collection throughout your shift, ensure accurate specimen processing and labeling, and support patients and clinical staff with professionalism and empathy. Responsibilities Greet patients as they arrive at the laboratory and provide a professional, courteous, and compassionate experience. Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections (including urine and fecal samples) using straight needles and butterfly needles, demonstrating proper technique and safety at all times. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to help ease anxiety and ensure understanding. Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements to maintain specimen integrity. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all patient and test information to ensure 100% accuracy. Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols. Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in appropriate containers or tubes, labeling accurately, and following all transport procedures and temperature requirements. Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and maintain a clean, safe, and compliant work area. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend required annual department trainings. Update and verify patient information in electronic medical records (EMR) and other systems, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality. Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a timely and professional manner. Handle insurance and billing-related tasks associated with specimen collection and processing as required. Process samples efficiently, ensuring proper handling, labeling, and documentation throughout the workflow. Provide excellent customer service to patients, clinicians, and colleagues, maintaining a patient-first mindset. Work primarily in the hospital setting, drawing blood throughout the shift, including in patient service centers (PSCs) and on various hospital floors as assigned. Adapt to working in high-pressure environments with 20–50+ draws per shift, maintaining accuracy, composure, and professionalism. Navigate EMR systems and other technology (such as scanners, tablets, computers, EMRs, and LIS) and troubleshoot basic issues as needed. Collaborate with a diverse team, participate in peer-auditing practices, and support colleagues to maintain high standards of quality and safety. Manage workload independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and maintain a strong attendance and reliability record. Demonstrate flexibility by adapting to trainer schedules, supporting staffing needs, and rotating between assigned areas within the hospital as required. Essential Skills Active Washington State Phlebotomy Certification (required). High School Diploma or GED. At least 2 years of phlebotomy experience, including proficiency with straight and butterfly needles. Demonstrated ability to perform difficult blood draws, including patients with scar tissue, rolling veins, pediatric patients, and geriatric patients. Proven experience completing 20–50+ blood draws per shift in high-pressure environments. Strong skills in blood collection, venipuncture, and specimen handling and labeling with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to navigate electronic medical record (EMR) systems and learn new software quickly. Experience using and troubleshooting devices such as scanners, tablets, computers, EMRs, and laboratory information systems (LIS). Knowledge of specimen processing, including centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to protocol. Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and compliance. Strong customer service skills with a patient-first mindset and the ability to ease patient anxiety and clearly explain procedures. Accurate data entry skills and attention to detail in handling patient information and laboratory documentation. Ability to manage workload independently and maintain productivity under pressure. Consistent reliability and a strong attendance record. Positive, hardworking attitude with a willingness to take initiative and collaborate effectively with team members. Additional Skills & Qualifications National Phlebotomy Certification (such as NHA or ASCP) or equivalent, preferred but not required. Experience working with geriatric and pediatric patient populations. Knowledge of medical terminology related to laboratory and phlebotomy procedures. Experience in high-volume hospital or clinical environments, including patient service centers. Strong adaptability and teamwork skills, including the ability to work effectively in diverse teams and participate in peer-auditing practices. Demonstrated resilience, with the ability to stay productive and maintain professionalism in high-pressure or rapidly changing situations. Willingness to move between assigned sites within the hospital, adapt to trainer schedules, and support staffing needs when required. Openness to feedback and eagerness to learn and improve skills over time. Comfort working with technology and quickly learning new systems and processes. Work Environment This role is based in a hospital laboratory setting in Vancouver, WA, at a medical center location. The Phlebotomist III will spend the entire shift on site at the hospital and will not float to external locations. You may work in patient service centers within the hospital or rotate throughout inpatient floors, drawing blood for the duration of the shift. The schedule is Monday through Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with weekend work available when offered. The environment is fast‑paced and high‑volume, with frequent exposure to a wide range of patient populations, including pediatric and geriatric patients, and a high number of daily blood draws. You will work with a variety of technologies and systems, including centrifuges, specimen processing equipment, scanners, tablets, computers, EMR systems, and laboratory information systems (LIS). Safety and regulatory compliance are central to the workplace, with strict adherence to OSHA and DEP guidelines and regular department trainings. The culture emphasizes a strong team environment, peer‑auditing, and opportunities for growth and movement into different areas such as laboratory operations, sales, or client services. The position is offered as a 3‑month contract with a strong likelihood of extension based on business needs and performance, and there may be future opportunities to transition into a direct role, though this is not guaranteed.
