Genetic Counselor

This role provides medical/clinical genetic counseling services to individuals and families with a known or suspected inherited condition. Provides individualized information and supportive counseling, coordinates genetic testing, evaluates and determines the needs of the individual and families, and works with the physician to make appropriate referrals based on the evaluations. Education Required – Master’s degree from an accredited training program in Genetic Counseling Work Experience Required – None Preferred – Post graduate clinical experience as a genetic counselor Certifications Required – Eligible for Board Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and/or the American Board of Medical Genetics Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard. Strong interpersonal skills. Job Duties Conduct thorough medical history, including detailed family histories. Collect and review all lab data and medical records of patients to establish current health status. Utilize clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment of health status. Gather and integrate patient data to assist in the development of an individualized plan of care, utilizing appropriate reference material. Coordinate handling of patient specimens with appropriate laboratory standards. Maintain knowledge of growth and development. Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions, and communication style. Perform other related duties as assigned. Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility and ensures compliance with all such laws, regulations and standards. Physical and Environmental Demands Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently.
