Medical Director of UCSF Birth Center
$161.7k - $344.4kUniversity of California, San Francisco
Serve our community as Medical Director of the UCSF Birth Center!
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking a dynamic, skilled, and influential Leader to serve as Medical Director of the UCSF Birth Center at UCSF Mission Bay and to educate the next generation of Ob/Gyn clinicians as faculty within our nationally acclaimed academic program.
This leader will oversee the clinical, educational, and operational functions of the unit, including the Obstetrical Emergency, Labor & Delivery, Antepartum, and Postpartum units - coordinating high-risk, high-acuity obstetric care. Additionally, this leader will ideally develop an outpatient practice within a UCSF prenatal care site. This role is an approximate 50/50 Administrative/Clinical split.
Why UCSF?
* Transformational patient care: UCSF Health is recognized worldwide for its progressive patient care, reflecting the latest medical knowledge, advanced technologies, and pioneering research.
* Diverse Clinical Opportunities: Manage a broad spectrum of conditions in both outpatient and hospital settings, serving a richly diverse patient population.
* Leadership & Growth: Ideal for candidates who aspire to influence program development, quality improvement, and hold administrative roles that shape the future of Obstetrics at UCSF.
* Academic Excellence: Collaborate with world-class researchers and educators in a vibrant academic setting.
* Distinguished Quality: UCSF Medical Center has been named one of the nation's top hospitals for adult and Maternal patient care and safety by U.S. News & World Report in its Best Hospitals ranking for 2024-2025, a distinction it has held for many years. UCSF Medical Center also tied for best hospital in California overall for adult care.
What We're Looking For:
* A proven leader with an interest and expertise in mentorship, education, and administrative responsibilities.
* Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
* Completion of a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship preferred, but not required.
* 6+ years of post-residency experience managing high-acuity obstetric care in a high-risk subspecialty such as Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Hospitalist, or Critical Care required.
* MD, DO, or MBBS
* An active and unrestricted California license by the time of hire.
What We Offer:
* Faculty appointment in the UCSF School of Medicine (rank and step commensurate with experience).
* Competitive compensation and UC benefits, including pension and health coverage.
* Access to premier facilities, cutting-edge technologies, and UCSF's integrated health system.
* A culture of innovation, teamwork, and academic excellence.
* Opportunities to grow in leadership, education, and research.
Why Live & Work in Parnassus & Mission Bay - A Physician's Perspective:
* Living in Mission Bay and Parnassus means being at the heart of one of the most vibrant medical communities in the country. Whether you're walking to rounds at UCSF or collaborating on research across disciplines, these neighborhoods offer more than just proximity - they offer purpose.
* Parnassus has a quiet, residential feel. It's tucked into the hills near Golden Gate Park, with leafy streets, old Victorians, and a sense of calm that's rare in a city. Mission Bay is sleek and modern, built for innovation. It's where medicine meets biotech, and where new ideas get tested, scaled, and launched.
* But life here isn't just about work. You're surrounded by culture - museums, music, food from every corner of the world. You can finish a long shift and be at the symphony or a street food festival within the hour. You can walk through eucalyptus forests, kayak along the bay, or grab dim sum with colleagues before heading home.
* Transit is easy. Muni, Caltrain, BART - it's all connected. Whether you're commuting, catching a flight, or just heading across town, you're covered.
* And most importantly, there's a sense of community. You're not just another physician in a big city. You're part of something - a network of people who care deeply about their work, their patients, and each other.
The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $161,700-$344,400. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation. UCSF Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences has a total salary plan that uses National benchmarking standards to set salaries by subspecialty.
