Maintenance Worker I

Join our team at Chatham County Parks and Recreation as a Maintenance Worker I where you'll utilize your outdoor expertise in landscaping and maintenance. With duties ranging from mowing and planting to minor repairs and equipment maintenance, this role offers an opportunity to contribute to the beauty and functionality of our parks and recreational areas.

Examples of Duties

Under supervision, you:

  • Mow, water, edge, trim, and maintain parks and other landscaped areas.
  • Plant, weed, and cultivate lawns, hedges, and flowers.
  • Lay sod and control garden pests with the use of chemicals.
  • Ensure the grounds are well maintained and clean by picking up paper and trash, making minor repairs to sprinkler systems and maintenance equipment, applying fertilizer and other lawn chemicals, raking leaves, preparing flower beds, repairing and sharpening hand tools, and cleaning public facilities.
  • Repair playground equipment, bleachers, tennis courts, fences, chalk ball fields, and other facilities.
  • Perform physical labor in varied weather conditions, work in close areas, bend, walk significant distances, and maintain records on all work activities.
  • Work a five (5) day schedule that may include working weekends and holidays, and during emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of eighth grade.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to drive a truck with an attached trailer.
  • Must be able to use and maintain hand tools.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • You are required to provide and wear approved steel toe protective footwear during regular working hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in commercial or residential lawn maintenance.
Supplemental Information
  • Selected candidates must successfully complete pre-employment processes including a 5-panel drug screen and background check.

During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.

In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing.

Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.
