Reports To: Director of Nursing / Chief Nursing Officer
Position Summary The Medical-Surgical Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, clinical care delivery, staffing, and administrative functions of the medical-surgical nursing unit. The Nurse Manager ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, staff development, and operational efficiency while promoting a safe, patient-centered environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct and supervise the daily operations of the medical-surgical unit.
- Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality patient care in accordance with hospital policies and evidence-based practices.
- Manage staffing schedules, staffing ratios, and unit productivity.
- Recruit, hire, orient, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff and support personnel.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management to nursing team members.
- Monitor patient care quality indicators, patient satisfaction scores, and clinical outcomes.
- Collaborate with physicians, department leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient care and unit performance.
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards, including infection control and patient safety regulations.
- Participate in budget planning, resource management, and cost-control initiatives.
- Address patient, family, and staff concerns in a professional and timely manner.
- Coordinate staff education, competency assessments, and ongoing professional development.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and support evidence-based nursing practices.
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to unit operations.
Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
- Nurse management or leadership certification preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of medical-surgical nursing experience required.
- Previous supervisory or nurse leadership experience preferred.
- Experience managing staff, budgets, and quality improvement initiatives preferred.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and quality improvement processes.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Strong conflict resolution and team-building skills.
- Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and healthcare technology.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist patients as needed.
- Ability to respond quickly during emergencies.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends or on-call responsibilities.
