Licensed Practical Nurse
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties. This includes executing physician orders and operating pill call. The nurse will assist the physician in examinations and treatments. They will perform technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their license. The nurse assists in the professional management of the medical department. They will apply appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates or residents. The nurse will attend sick call with the physician to see inmates or residents. They will prepare a list of inmates or residents to be examined and set up the examining room and equipment. The nurse operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies. They will control medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment and inventory as required. The nurse will perform emergency procedures as needed. Maintaining a clean work environment and utilizing appropriate sanitation methods is essential. Documenting and reporting activities in accordance with established policies is required. The nurse will assist supervisors with evaluating the provision of all medical services. Maintaining absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records is critical. They will observe and record inmate or resident behavior. Inspecting the medical unit for items that could be considered contraband is necessary. The nurse will assist with preparing and maintaining various records, reports, and logs. Reading, comprehending, and interpreting medical procedures, regulations, and legal documents is part of the job. Responding to lawsuits through corporate counsel and attending court hearings may be required. The nurse will communicate effectively to staff, inmates, residents, and the general public. It is essential to help evaluate and recommend physical safety requirements for a safe working environment. Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient medical services is important. The nurse will prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required. They will escort or coordinate the movement of inmates or residents for medical treatment. Helping to initiate and complete investigations with accuracy as directed is necessary. Engaging in functions in confined areas and working rotating shifts will be part of the responsibilities. Being aware of verbal abuse and hostile opinions from inmates or residents is crucial.
