Professional Geologist I – 37020533 This position is located in Tallahassee, FL. It is a high‑responsibility role that provides technical oversight, project management, and professional geologic certification for state‑funded petroleum cleanup projects conducted in accordance with Section 376, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 62‑780, Florida Administrative Code. Position Overview and Responsibilities Oversee contamination assessment and remedial action activities for state‑funded rehabilitation projects as a Site Manager; recommend corrective actions, negotiate scope changes, prepare change orders, negotiate site‑specific elements with contractors, prepare work orders, review and approve contractor invoices, and monitor environmental rehabilitation and consultant efficiency. Provide geology guidance, review, oversight, and project management of work performed by Agency Term Contractors (ATC); review geology work products, identify deficiencies, recommend remedial strategies, implement corrective procedures, and develop guidance documents for PRP. Respond to specific requests for assistance from ATCs, Division of Waste Management staff, and leadership. Provide geology document review support to contracted cleanup counties, coordinate and supervise reviews performed by other staff, and perform technical reviews of PRP documents when necessary. Help develop and implement a continuing training program for geology for the PRP; provide training in appropriate formats based on specific requirements. Perform other duties as required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Geologic and Hydrogeologic concepts and principles. Knowledge of the Petroleum Cleanup provisions of Section 376, F.S. and applicable Department rules and guidance. Skill in using personal computers. Effective verbal and written communication. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of professionals. Ability to plan and organize a complex workload. Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to analyze and interpret scientific and technical data. Ability to conduct inspections. OSHA HAZWOPER certification. Ability to draft and evaluate complex permits or similar compliance concerns with sufficient expertise for managing complex issues. Ability to provide guidance and/or training on complex permits or similar compliance concerns. Minimum Qualifications At least four years of verifiable related experience in geology, environmental science, or natural sciences; post‑secondary degrees may replace required experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by an approved agency. Valid driver’s license. Travel required. Position of Special Trust Requirement This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422. Successful completion of background screening will be required. Applicable Job‑Specific License or Certifications Licensed as a Professional Geologist in Florida. OSHA certification obtained within six months of employment. Florida Certified Contract Manager (FCCM) certification obtained within one year of employment. Preferred Qualifications OSHA Safety Certification. Florida Contract Manager Certification. Experience with OCULUS, STCM, FIRST, and MapDirect. Pay Annual salary range: $50,584.67 – $62,000.00 (commensurate with experience).
