Correctional Institution Administrator (Deputy Warden)

Job Summary This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections (DOC). The Deputy Warden provides oversight for planning, organizing, leading, directing and controlling of major programs such as security, rehabilitation, compliance, support services, and operations in the DOC. This position functions as a member of the facility’s management team. Decision making is mission critical and has substantial impact to the overall risk reduction and risk control operations for the department and the citizens of Washington, DC. Duties And Responsibilities Administers and manages service provisions related to the safe, secure, clean and humane facility conditions. Engages in programs and initiatives to further the institution's relationship with the community. Directs the security program for security equipment, tool control, key control, accountability and policy compliance. Participates in policy leadership discussions to achieve Departmental goals and guide operational decisions and resource allocation. Provides clear instruction and direction to staff on adherence to policy and procedure for the achievement of said goals and objectives within the framework of the Department's Operational Plan, and oversees accomplishment of objectives within established timeframes. Manages and oversees the direction, execution, deployment, training and monitoring of staff, which includes but is not limited to adjustment board, mailroom, commissary, environmental services, supply management, clothing issuances. Coordinates through the Center for Professional Development and Learning (CPDL) relevant training for employees assigned to the facility including orientation, preservice, in service and specialized training programs. Ensures the humane treatment of inmates as set forth in applicable administrative rules, policy and procedures, and national expected practices. Ensures the safety, security and welfare of inmates, enforcement of facility rules, including the Adjustment Board process to correct negative behavior and reinforce the need for positive behavior. Qualifications And Education The incumbent must have demonstrated the ability to perform supervisory or administrative duties successfully. This includes (1) understanding the problems of custody, treatment, training, and release of inmates of penal or correctional institutions; (2) a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of an institution's internal policies, programs, regulations, and procedures; and (3) training subordinates, coordinating and directing activities and functions, evaluating performance of operations and the effectiveness of programs, and maintaining high standards or work objectives. AND Specialized Experience Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the line of progression.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Incumbent must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR). Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license during employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIORNMENT

Work is performed in a Correctional Institution. Ability to provide leadership and direction in a supervisory capacity and team-based environment. Ability to work under tight time constraints/pressure related to facility operations. Work is often accomplished under conditions of great stress and limited time for the applications of guides in the decision, making process. Incumbent is subject to twenty-four (24) hour call back or return to duty. Other Significant Facts Tour of Duty: Flexibility in work schedule may be required. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
