Lead Interpreter/Translator - Spanish

JOB SUMMARY The Lead Medical Interpreter/Translator is responsible for organizing and overseeing the daily work activities of the department, ensuring workflow is managed appropriately, and is partially accountable for the work of others. The role identifies and resolves complex problems within the Interpreter Services team, serves as a resource, provides expert guidance to staff, and mentors other Medical Interpreter/Translators to promote professionalism. It also conducts simple and complex medical and general interpreting/translating for the patient care staff and for patients and families, and works on departmental initiatives that support goals and conceptualize new programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. Partially accountable for work product of others, with authority to work as a group leader, including training new staff, assigning work, monitoring progress, and scheduling. Performs medical interpretation for patients and families in consecutive and sight translation modalities throughout the hospital and clinics, including care conferences, discussions of poor prognosis, end‑of‑life discussions, and teaching sessions. Performs medical translation, independently translating, editing, and proofreading after‑visit summaries for a range of specialties in an accurate, clear, and timely manner. Connects patients and families to hospital resources as needed. Shares observations with medical staff, clinical social workers, patient experience staff, chaplains, and ancillary staff about potential patient needs. Responds to code emergency requests, confirms language preference, and provides interpretation for crisis interventions. Manges interpretation for all languages, including outside agencies, phone interpretation, spoken and sign language services. Participates in leadership activities in the department, such as the Interpreter Services Professional Practice Council and the Buddy or Internship Programs. Assists with basic linguistic and advanced cultural brokering as needed. Implements principles of advocacy to support patient safety and autonomy with diplomacy and collaboration. Provides in‑services and other presentations on behalf of the department and represents it on hospital‑wide or unit committees. Conducts ongoing review and development of department policies and procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. Education: Master’s degree in translation and interpretation and one (1) year of hospital experience. Education: Bachelor’s degree in translation and interpretation and three (3) years of hospital experience. Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of interpreting and hospital experience. Health Care Interpreters (CHI) certification within 548 days of hire. Or Certification for Medical Interpreters (CMI) certification within 548 days of hire. KNOWLEDGE Native or near-native ability in verbal and written English and a non‑English working language. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology. Ability to perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation. Advanced knowledge of cultural, health‑literacy, and perceptual factors that affect patient treatment and communication. Excellent client‑relationship skills, exemplary interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and professionalism. Confidentiality of sensitive information. Calm under pressure and applied sound judgment. Ability to work well with individuals at all organizational levels. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to engage patients and families in crises. Salary is determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and internal equity. New team members typically join at the minimum to mid salary range.
