This is not a passive estimating role.

This position is for a senior public works electrical estimator who owns bid strategy, sources work, exercises Go/No-Go judgment, and protects margin . If your background is limited to takeoffs, spreadsheet pricing, or bidding whatever comes down from above, this role will not be a fit .

So Cal Communications Group is a California public works contractor with a strong reputation in the public sector. We are expanding our electrical division and are hiring a senior estimator to play a foundational, high-trust role in its growth. This is a seat at the table—not a support role.

Compensation & Structure

• Base salary: $160,000 – $180,000
• Performance-based bonus
• Direct access to ownership with real influence over project selection

What You Will Own

• Bid strategy and Go/No-Go recommendations for public works electrical projects
• A disciplined bid pipeline focused on qualified, winnable work
• Risk evaluation, pricing strategy, and margin protection
• Post-bid analysis and continuous improvement
• Advisory input to ownership on which projects the company pursues

This role is accountable for judgment , not just output.

What You Will Do

• Estimate 8-12 public works projects monthly ($500K-$3M each)
• Lead end-to-end estimating for public works projects
• Perform takeoffs, labor analysis, scope reviews, and risk assessments
• Source and pursue work through bid platforms, agencies, and GC relationships
• Engage directly with general contractors and industry partners
• Own the number from bid to handoff
• Ensure clean scope handoff to project management
• Build estimating system that scales

• Improves estimating discipline as volume increases

Performance is measured by bid quality, margin outcomes, and judgment —not bid volume alone.

What You Bring

• 10+ years of public works electrical estimating experience
• Proven California public works wins of $1M+ projects
• Expert in prevailing wage rates, certified payroll, DIR compliance, and public agency bidding procedures
• Success estimating prevailing wage electrical work
• Proficient in Accubid, Bluebeam, PlanetBids, BidNet Direct, and/or agency-specific portals
• Strong understanding of public procurement, risk, and bid strategy
• Comfortable operating with autonomy, accountability, and visibility
• Willing and able to decline bad work

Why This Role Matters

The estimator hired into this role will either accelerate growth for the next 5–7 years or materially slow it down . We are looking for someone who wants ownership, influence, and responsibility—not cover.

Location: Onsite – This position is based out of our headquarters in Chino, California. The estimator will prepare bids from the office and attend occasional job walks throughout Los Angeles County and surrounding areas.

Travel Requirement: 10-15% local travel for site walks and pre-bid meetings.

• Full-Time
• Monday to Friday, Flexible Day Hours (typically 8 AM–5 PM)
