Generative AI Engineer (Grand Rapids Metropolitan Area)

Position Overview

A large grocery retailer is seeking a Lead AI Engineer / Agentic Commerce Lead to drive the architecture, development, and delivery of customer-facing AI agent experiences. This is a highly technical leadership role designed for an experienced engineer who enjoys both hands-on development and ownership of product delivery.

What You'll Do

• Serve as the technical lead for customer-facing AI and agentic commerce initiatives.
• Design and implement scalable architectures for AI-powered applications and autonomous agent workflows.
• Write, review, and maintain high-quality production code.
• Define and uphold engineering standards, code quality practices, and agent behavior expectations.
• Lead technical decision-making across product development efforts.
• Own project delivery from concept through production deployment.
• Prioritize, manage, and track team backlogs without dedicated Product Owners or Scrum Masters.
• Automate operational and Agile processes wherever possible to maximize engineering productivity.
• Mentor and support a team of early-career software developers.
• Collaborate with engineering leadership to shape the future of AI-driven customer experiences.
• Participate in a modern development environment leveraging AI coding assistants and agent-assisted software development.

About the Team

The Agentic Commerce team is an innovation-focused R&D organization responsible for building next-generation AI experiences for customers and developing reusable agent frameworks that can scale across the enterprise.

The team currently consists of engineering leadership and senior engineers and is expanding significantly through the addition of new engineering talent. The group operates using a continuous flow delivery model , where work is defined through technical specifications and pulled by engineers rather than managed through traditional sprint ceremonies.

A significant portion of the software development lifecycle incorporates AI-assisted development, with engineers reviewing, validating, and productionizing agent-generated code.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience.
• Proven experience designing and building scalable distributed systems.
• Strong software development skills in modern programming languages such as Python, Java, TypeScript, or C#.
• Experience building AI, machine learning, or agent-based applications.
• Deep understanding of software architecture, cloud-native solutions, APIs, and systems integration.
• Experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring engineers.
• Strong ability to balance strategic architecture decisions with hands-on coding responsibilities.
• Experience managing technical backlogs and driving delivery outcomes.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with LLM-powered applications, AI agents, or conversational AI platforms.
• Experience with orchestration frameworks such as Temporal or similar workflow platforms.
• Knowledge of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, and agent frameworks.
• Experience implementing AI governance, evaluation, and quality assurance processes.
• Familiarity with continuous flow, lean product development, or modern Agile delivery models.
• Experience leveraging AI-powered development tools and coding assistants.
