JOB SUMMARY
The Product Development Engineer develops complex electromechanical systems for heavy industrial applications. This role works with cross-functional teams to define customer and market requirements, develop and test products, manage risk, and bring new products to market efficiently and with minimal rework. The ideal candidate is hands-on, analytical, and comfortable troubleshooting products, evaluating risks, and balancing quality, cost, manufacturability, and time to market while ensuring safe operation
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Demonstrates the company's values while supporting our vision and mission to exceed customer expectations
- Develops complex mechanisms and electromechanical systems with robust, precise movement for a variety of applications
- Models concepts and detailed designs using CAD software, with Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks preferred
- Translates customer and market requirements into product specifications and formal design documentation
- Collaborates with cross-functional Product Development Teams to develop products that meet customer requirements while optimizing cost, quality, and time to market
- Evaluates design and project risks and uses formal tools such as DFMEA when appropriate
- Designs large fabrications with high-tolerance features to support integration with electromechanical mechanisms
- Sizes hydraulic, pneumatic, AC electrical, and DC electrical systems and components as appropriate for the application
- Performs engineering analysis, including tolerance stack-up, stress, strain, and fatigue analysis
- Generates engineering drawings using ASME Y14.5-2009 standards and effective GD&T practices
- Works proactively with Operations to develop robust, manufacturable designs through Stage Gate product development processes
- Manages multiple projects while maintaining strong organization, communication, and time management
- Performs root cause analysis of quality issues and supports efforts to reduce equipment downtime throughout the product life cycle
- Provides technical direction and details to the machine designer/drafter team and communicates project status with the program office
- Works directly with customers and end users to understand applications, requirements, and market needs
- Considers system and operator safety throughout the design and product development process
- Supports product testing, demonstrations, verification, validation, and customer on-site testing as needed
- Provides hands-on troubleshooting and operational support in real-time environments when necessary
- Provides customer training on new products when needed
- Generates product Bills of Materials and Item Cards in the ERP system, including Syteline, Sage, or Intuitive
- Applies sound design-for-manufacturability and lean principles to product development and project workflows
- Builds relationships with key accounts by helping solve product needs and supporting the Sales team with technical solutions
- Works with third-party engineering firms when additional engineering resources are needed
- Conducts formal and informal product and system risk assessments
- Maintains a professional and collaborative approach under pressure and demonstrates reliable attendance and punctuality
- Works overtime or additional hours as needed to meet business demands
- Travel is less than 10%, primarily domestic, with occasional international travel; a valid passport is required
- Other duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 3–5 years of related engineering or product design experience
- Proven ability to successfully manage large engineering or product development projects
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong mechanical and electromechanical engineering skills
- Experience with product development, risk assessment, and design for manufacturability
- Experience with engineering analysis and tolerance stack-up analysis
- Experience with finite element analysis or other computational engineering tools preferred
- Strong verbal, written, and cross-functional communication skills
- Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills
- Proficiency with CAD software, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Project
- Familiarity with MRP/ERP systems and Bills of Materials
- Experience with Syteline, Sage, Intuitive, or similar ERP systems preferred
- Ability to work effectively with customers, end users, Operations, Sales, and other cross-functional partners

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Office and travel have moderate noise levels. Machine/Product demonstrations and customer visits can have loud noise levels.
To meet customer requirements the employee may be asked to travel in an airplane and/or vehicle to get to customer work sites. At times, this position walks on or through high elevations, underground and/or confined spaces, around high voltage and in heavy industrial and/or construction work environments such as bridges, dams, mines, power plants, ship yards, etc. The employee must be able to work in hazardous working environments with possible extreme working conditions to complete customer training and/or applications support.
Noise levels may be extreme and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided, and usage is driven by customer requirements. Other required PPE includes, but is not limited to, steel toe boots, hardhat and safety glasses. Customer working environments can be extreme in regards to height, confined space, physical requirements and hazards.
