Description The Hair and Makeup Shop Supervisor provides leadership of The Juilliard School Hair and Makeup Shop. This position works in collaboration with production costume and wig designers and is responsible for supervising and facilitating the hair, wig and makeup requirements of The Juilliard School Productions. The ideal candidate demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in wig building, wig and hair styling, and theatrical makeup. The role requires strong organizational and collaborative skills, and the ability to deal diplomatically with a wide variety of people. The salary for this role is \$87,000 - \$95,000 per year. Role Responsibilities Staff Management Form a mutually collaborative and supportive team with the Associate Shop Supervisor and shop staff. Create and manage shop calendar. Recruit, hire, and orient all hair and wigs overhire, ensuring highest quality of work and safety for students. Follow all Human Resource policies for onboarding and management of digital information. Apprentices Work with Director of Apprentice Program and Associate Shop Supervisor in interviewing and selecting Hair and Makeup Shop apprentices. Oversee all Apprentice hair and wig training. Coordinate with the Associate Shop Supervisor to assign daily production activities and run crew assignments for apprentices. Report regularly on apprentice progress with Director of Apprentice Program. Budgets Management Work with Associate Shop Supervisor and Production Management to estimate budgets. Manage hair and makeup purchases within resources and provide all necessary budget tracking and information to the Associate Shop Supervisor. Keep an overview of shop total operating budgets, including maintenance, inventory, and safety purchases. Meetings Attend weekly production staff meeting. Attend production and design meetings and tech/dress production meetings when required. Schedule in‑shop design meeting with costume designers as needed. Schedule weekly/monthly Hair and Makeup Shop staff meetings to review shop schedule and production updates. Production Duties Work directly with directors, costumes designers, production management, and the Associate Shop Supervisor to determine production hair and makeup designs and priorities and keep expenditures within predetermined time, labor, and budget constraints. Meet with costume designers and shop staff to review show‑specific designs and prioritize what is built, pulled, rented and/or shopped for respective productions. Coordinate with the Associate Shop Supervisor and costume designer about fitting requirements and schedule. Supervise and document all hair and wig fittings. Organize design information and prepare a wig build, maintenance, and strike plan. Supervise, delegate responsibilities, and manage workflow and distribution of labor for builds, haircuts, styling, and crewing of each production to ensure wigs and facial hair builds and styling are achieved in a timely, safe, and efficient manner. Facilitate performer haircuts as needed for productions. Coordinate with the Associate Shop Supervisor and production management to determine crew needs and apprentice and crew assignments. Meet with wardrobe staff and stage management prior to tech rehearsal to discuss preshow schedule, quick changes, and tracking. Create makeup and hair plots. Demonstrate makeup application and wig/hair styling to staff, overhire, and student performers as needed. Attend dress rehearsals as needed to support designer, performers, and crew. Set up and monitor preshow and backstage spaces, ensuring work spaces and practices maintain the highest standard of safety and sanitation. Supervise dress rehearsal hair, wig prep, makeup and quick changes. Read and review all daily rehearsal reports, disseminating pertinent information and responding to any questions and concerns. Communicate rehearsal notes to crew and staff and facilitate timely, accurate completion of dress rehearsal notes. Create maintenance schedule for wig washing, styling, resets, and strike. Shop And Inventory Management, Maintenance, And Safety Ensure wig and makeup stock represents the highest standards of quality, sanitation and safety. Manage and track shop inventory and shop or assign shopping duties for wig and hair materials, supplies, and equipment. Work to continually develop effective ways of organizing, caring for, and maintaining stock. Monitor shop and performance spaces on a regular basis to assure that all hair and makeup areas are being professionally maintained. Establish task checklists and schedules to assign staff responsibilities including inventory and upkeep of shop, storage and performance spaces. Minimum Requirements Ability to work well collaboratively as part of and in a team setting. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times in a fast paced, high intensity environment. A commitment to equity, diversity, inclusiveness, and belonging. Minimum of 7 years’ experience working in theatrical wigs, hairstyles, and makeup. Formal hair and/or makeup training (cosmetology license, barbering license, or makeup certification). Experience in working with all varieties of hair types and textures and skin tones. Experience and commitment to working with a diverse student body in terms of gender expression, race, sexual orientation. Demonstrated leadership, supervision, and budget and project management experience. Excellent organizational and time/material estimation skills. Working knowledge of wig and facial hair construction, ventilating, and styling. Knowledge and skills in both modern and period haircutting and styling. Experience in teaching wig and hair skills to staff and crew. Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, and administrators) with diplomacy and tact.
