Special Education Mathematics Teacher

The Special Education Mathematics Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-based mathematics instruction to high school students with disabilities while ensuring students receive the supports, accommodations, and services outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The teacher fosters an inclusive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, self-advocacy, independence, and post-secondary readiness. This position requires a commitment to collaboration with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, families, and students to support success in both academic and social-emotional growth.

Instruction and Student Learning
  • Deliver engaging, differentiated mathematics instruction aligned to New York State Learning Standards.
  • Develop and implement lessons that address varied student learning needs, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional practices and a variety of teaching strategies, technology tools, and instructional resources.
  • Provide opportunities for students to think critically, solve problems, communicate mathematical reasoning, and apply learning in meaningful contexts.
  • Monitor student progress and use data to inform instruction and interventions.
  • Support students in achieving grade-level expectations while addressing individualized learning goals.
Classroom Management and Learning Environment
  • Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Promote positive student behavior through proactive classroom management practices.
  • Maintain accurate records and organize instructional and compliance-related responsibilities efficiently.
  • Foster a culture of respect, belonging, and high expectations for all students.
Collaboration and Student Support
  • Work collaboratively with general education teachers to provide appropriate accommodations, modifications, and instructional supports.
  • Co-teach, consult, and provide direct services within inclusive classroom settings as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with counselors, psychologists, social workers, administrators, and related service providers to address academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
  • Participate in problem-solving teams and intervention planning processes.
IEP Development and Case Management
  • Serve as the case manager for assigned students with disabilities.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and maintain compliant Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Ensure that all accommodations, modifications, goals, and services outlined in student IEPs are implemented with fidelity.
  • Collect and analyze data to monitor progress toward annual goals and objectives.
  • Complete required documentation, evaluations, and reports in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate and facilitate communication among students, families, staff, and service providers regarding student progress and needs.
  • Ensure parents receive progress updates and are actively involved in the special education process.
  • Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings and contribute meaningful recommendations based on student performance data.
Family and Community Engagement
  • Establish positive relationships with families and maintain consistent communication regarding student progress, achievements, and concerns.
  • Support families in understanding available resources, services, and educational opportunities.
  • Advocate for student needs while fostering productive partnerships among all stakeholders.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in ongoing professional learning and district professional development activities.
  • Remain current with developments in special education, mathematics instruction, and educational technology.
  • Contribute positively to school improvement initiatives, committees, and collaborative teams.
  • Uphold all district policies, professional standards, and legal requirements related to special education services.

Reports to: Building Principal; Responsible to the Special Education Supervisor, and the Director of Special Education.
