Job Title: Phlebotomist IIJob Description The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in safely and accurately collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. This position involves performing venipunctures and other specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and making recommendations to improve processes in a fast-paced clinical environment. Responsibilities + Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure. + Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and laboratory protocols. + Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, addressing questions and concerns in a professional manner. + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity at all times. + Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the prescription or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. + Package specimens for transport, following all protocols to maintain proper temperature, stability, and chain of custody. + Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling and handling them according to protocol. + Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed. + Perform decontamination and maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with laboratory standards. + Record maintenance data accurately and in a timely manner to support equipment reliability and regulatory compliance. + Update patient information in the system as needed to ensure accurate and current records. + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, including all safety and environmental protocols. + Attend annual departmental trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and best practices. + Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to callers as appropriate, providing clear and accurate information while maintaining confidentiality. + Participate in troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality. + Support training activities by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and workflow processes as needed. + Float between multiple designated locations as required, providing phlebotomy services wherever needed. Essential Skills + Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. + Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. + Proficiency in performing venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles. + Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, store, and package specimens according to established procedures. + Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying orders. + Ability to understand and accurately follow physicians' orders and laboratory protocols. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. + High school diploma or GED with 2-4 years of overall work experience. + Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. + Effective verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to inquiries. + Ability to work efficiently and accurately in a fast-paced clinical environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working as a float phlebotomist across multiple locations or departments. + Comfort with handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. + Strong customer service orientation and ability to interact professionally with patients and clinical staff. + Ability to participate in and benefit from ongoing annual departmental training. + Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks such as specimen collection, labeling, documentation, and phone inquiries. + Problem-solving skills to assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and suggesting process improvements. Work Environment This is a float position that requires working across multiple clinical locations, including sites in Bayshore, Babylon, Hicksville, and Commack. The role operates in a fast-paced laboratory and hospital environment where you will regularly perform venipunctures, handle biological specimens, and use equipment such as centrifuges, computers, and standard phlebotomy tools. You will work with Microsoft Office Suite and laboratory information systems to document and track specimens and patient information. The standard shift for this position is Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The work setting emphasizes strict adherence to safety, OSHA, and DEP regulations, as well as proper specimen handling and storage procedures to maintain sample integrity. Professional, clean, and appropriate clinical attire is expected to support a safe, hygienic, and patient-focused environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Amityville, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.16 - $25.16/hr.
