About Usdan

Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1968 that provides arts education in a camp setting, where fun, creativity, and learning intermingle freely in the beautiful outdoors.

Our goal is to instill in our community a desire and drive to contribute creatively to the world now and for the rest of their lives.

Each summer, teachers and artists — actors, directors, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, composers, dancers, poets, and novelists — come together to teach and collaborate with our campers, grades K–12. Set on 140 acres of natural beauty in Wheatley Heights, Long Island, NY, Usdan is a safe, welcoming place within which campers have the freedom to build new friendships, explore nature, gain personal independence, and have fun, while developing new skills and techniques in their chosen artforms.

Position summary

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the general ledger, producing financial reports for all internal and external financial statement users and supervising the day-to-day operations of the financial reporting and accounting functions for the organization.

Job responsibilities

This position will manage budget oversight and actual expenses for the operating fund, campaign, and grant programs.

Responsibilities

• Manage accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with GAAP standards, regulatory requirements, and rules for non-profits
• Responsible for the correct reporting, reconciling, and recording of all financial areas - accounts payable, accounts receivable, vendor relations, and payroll processing
• Prepares meaningful financial reporting materials for monthly financial reviews, and quarterly management reporting to the Board and Board committees
• Leads monthly reviews of every balance sheet account, reconciling and ensuring the accuracy of the amounts/accounts
• Works closely with the COO in reporting and tracking of actuals vs budget and updating projections throughout the year
• Establishes and maintains internal controls to verify the integrity of all systems, processes, and data
• Track and reconcile grant expenditures against approved budgets; escalate compliance questions to the Chief Operating Officer
• Responsible for the maintenance and data integrity of all financial information in various cloud-based systems, including Momentus, Trinet, and various other financial services and apps
• Serve as the principal day-to-day liaison to the external auditor during fieldwork to satisfy all information requests regarding trial balances, Balance Sheet reconciliations, confirmations, statistical sampling, and any miscellaneous requests
• Communicates with co-workers, management, vendors, and other stakeholders in a courteous and professional manner
• Flag financial risks, control gaps, or reporting concerns to the Chief Operating Officer for review. Oversee budget management functions, including preparation of the annual budget
• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements for review, including explanations for variance analysis and prepares cash flow analysis
• Provide financial reports and analysis to the Executive team, the Finance & Facilities Committee and Board of Directors as needed
• Follow and help maintain established financial control procedures and reporting systems. Support monthly reporting to the Finance & Facilities Committee on investment account activity. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive team
• Handle confidential information with sensitivity and in a trustworthy manner
• Attend department and staff meetings and trainings as required.

Qualifications

• Accounting or related degree required, CPA preferredAt least 3 years of experience in an accounting or finance leadership roleNonprofit experience required
• Computer literate and ability to learn accounting software and database, Momentus/Ungerboeck, ADP experience a plus
• Ability to solve problems independently, effectively, and creatively
• Demonstrates keen attention to detail
• Ability to research and resolve accounting discrepancies and apply established poilicies and procedures.
• Highly organized with proven ability to manage multiple high priority projects
• Demonstrates outstanding accounting and financial management skills

HOURS & LOCATION

• September through May:
• Monday-Friday hybrid 2-day in office / 3-day work from home schedule, up to full time in office
• Workdays are at least 8 hours, with the possibility of additional hours based on business needs.
• The hybrid work schedule is subject to change as business needs evolve. Usdan will endeavor to provide as much advance notice as possible.
• June through August: Monday-Friday in office 5 days per week. During the summer camp season, the day begins at 8am.
• Year round: Some evening and/or weekend work required with flexible shift between the hours of 8am and 6pm.

Compensation and benefits

• The salary range for this position is $75K - $90K, commensurate with experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Usdan is a 140-acre campus with facilities spread throughout - distances vary and are along uneven surfaces, up and down hills. Some facilities are elevated and require one to two stairs to enter.
