CDOC Mental Health Counselor Social Worker/Counselor II (Buena Vista)

About the Position Position located in Buena Vista, Colorado. A residency waiver has been granted; applicants may be residents or non‑residents of Colorado, but must meet the minimum qualifications. Responsibilities Provide professional mental health services to inmates, including formal and informal evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions. Maintain accurate mental health needs levels in the information system, including Psychiatric and Developmental Disability codes. Offer group, brief, and individual therapy and crisis intervention, participating in the 24‑hour mental health on‑call rotation. Coordinate emergency and non‑emergency transfers for inmates with acute mental health needs. Provide clinical direction to non‑clinical staff in mental health care and treatment of inmates. Ensure continuity of care by making appropriate referrals and providing necessary documentation to receiving units, facilities, or agencies. Document treatment accurately and timely, both handwritten and electronically. Monitor inmate treatment, listen to concerns, and provide counseling and direction. Promote safety and security in the clinical and correctional environment through conscientious observation and contraband control. Report safety and security violations, attend required training including the self‑defense course for self‑protection skills. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a current, valid permit or license from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agents that includes one of the following: Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Social Worker, Clinical Social Worker, Psychologist Candidate, or Psychologist. Preferred Qualifications Graduation with a master’s or doctoral degree in a mental health field such as counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or psychology from a program accredited by CACREP, CSWE, AAMFT/COAMFTE, or APA. License eligibility as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or Licensed Psychologist. Experience providing mental health treatment in a correctional environment. Required Competencies Ability to provide professional mental health treatment to inmates. Must be efficient and able to participate in a 24‑hour mental health on‑call rotation. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Maintain required registration, permit, or licensure. Work effectively with a diverse inmate population. Provide comprehensive clinical documentation. Must be physically capable of performing required defensive tactics and meet basic fitness standards. Remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure. Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and adherence to all safety protocols.
