Become a part of our team at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center located in San Francisco, CA, as the Chief of Psychiatry Services!
In this leadership role, the Chief will oversee the Mental Health (MH) Service, focusing on the establishment of both short- and long-term objectives, as well as formulating policies and procedures to achieve these goals. The position entails ensuring effective outcomes measurement and implementing data-driven quality assurance processes. Additionally, the Chief will be responsible for preparing various reports and responses, including those for Congress, briefing documents, issue briefs, and decision papers for the medical center's leadership, which may involve sensitive and complex information. The Chief will also develop policies and procedures, create performance standards, position descriptions, and functional statements, while monitoring the clinical performance of the staff. Conducting performance evaluations and fulfilling other clinical and administrative duties to uphold the mission of the service and the medical center is also essential.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead a multidisciplinary service within a Tier 1A facility.
- Engage in a robust clinical program with a focus on patient outcome metrics.
- Practice within the limits of assigned privileges.
- Adhere to the bylaws, rules, and regulations of the facility and agency.
- Meet the medical staff criteria for initial appointments and reappointments, including Continuing Medical Education (CME).
- Follow prescribed record-keeping practices in line with established rules and regulations.
- Comply with information security policies and procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with patients, families, staff, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in educational and research activities within the Mental Health Service and attend scheduled meetings.
- Complete all assigned healthcare record reviews, peer reviews, and evaluations within designated timeframes.
- Maintain quality assurance standards through assigned peer reviews.
Board certification is mandatory due to faculty status associated with UCSF affiliation.

- Meet medical staff criteria for initial and ongoing appointments, including CME.
- Follow prescribed record-keeping practices in accordance with established rules.
- Comply with information security policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with patients, families, staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Engage in educational activities and attend scheduled meetings within the Medical Service.
- Complete all assigned health record reviews and peer reviews within specified timelines.
- Maintain quality assurance standards through assigned peer reviews.
- Expected Salary Range: $280K - $350K (negotiable based on qualifications, credentials, and experience).
- Education Debt Reduction Program: Authorized for student loan repayment.
- Work Schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Compensation: Competitive salary, annual performance bonuses, and regular salary increases.
- Paid Time Off: 50-55 days annually (including 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and potentially 5 days for CME).
- Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions from the organization.
- Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance (many programs can be carried into retirement).
- Licensure: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory.
- CME: Possible reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year (must be full-time with board certification).
- Malpractice Coverage: Free liability protection with tail coverage included.
- Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and minimal restrictions on moonlighting.
