Job Summary The incumbent is responsible for sustaining an environment of intrinsic good will for the practice while providing optimum services to patients. The incumbent provides licensed medical support to medical care providers as a vocational nurse for the department/clinical team to which it is assigned. The incumbent is supervised by a licensed physician or registered nurse when performing duties within the vocational nurse scope of practice. The incumbent works under the direction of clinic/department management for administrative purposes, including customer service, professional behavior & development, assignment & scheduling of work, and performance of job functions not requiring supervision by a LIP. Minimum Qualifications California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR Must provide proof of valid Intravenous (IV) Therapy and Blood Withdrawal certification Must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited school of vocational nursing, or completion of education and experience as a corpsman in the United States military Minimum of two (2) years of Licensed Vocational Nurse experience. Ability to pass the safe to practice pharmacology exam. Skills within the scope of practice of a licensed vocational nurse. Knowledge of common medications, indications, dosage ranges, dilutions, side effects, and potential toxicity, and typical allergic reactions. Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, with ability to recognize the abnormal. Observation skills to detect changes in patient’s condition and potential adverse reactions to treatments. Knowledge of medical terminology sufficient to communicate effectively with patients, health care providers and insurance company representatives regarding appointments, services, procedures, authorizations and referrals. Ability to accurately interpret physician orders to ensure complete and up-to-date patient records. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all co-workers; to consistently interact with patients and other members of the public with patience, courtesy and professionalism, both in person and on the telephone; and to effectively respond to individuals who may be angry or upset. Problem solving skills to independently define a problem identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create viable solutions and take the necessary action to implement problem resolution and ensure prompt and satisfactory resolution. Decision making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action and to appropriately seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached. Organizing skills to establish priorities for own work to accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments; respond flexibly to changes in priorities; and maintain work effectiveness in a setting with a high volume of patient activity and frequent interruptions. Ability to efficiently use computer system applications for all functions required for this position, including typing skills sufficient to use computer keyboard for timely and accurate input and production. Writing skills, using proper English grammar, spelling and punctuation, sufficient to compose messages and/or routine correspondence, which is clear, concise and easy to understand. Knowledge of clinic’s practices and protocols related to medical records, medical assisting, nursing support, and other business and office procedures. Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines governing medical records; confidentiality, privacy, and provision toothers, including HIPAA. Basic knowledge of health care insurance systems as related to required job functions for this position, including Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMO, PPO, fee‑for‑service, and workers’ compensation, sufficient to properly obtain and track authorizations, make referrals, coordinate hospital admissions, medication authorization, DME and explain provisions and requirements to patients. At our UC Davis teaching center – an NCQA-certified Patient-Centered Medical Home - all personnel – residents, faculty, staff – are trained and engage in rapid cycle clinical quality improvement efforts. These are aimed at identifying and addressing process and other problems that undermine patient care quality, safety, and experience or provider and staff experience and wellness. Residents and faculty also participate in cutting edge, team-based care including innovations such as integrated on-site mental health care at our partner Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC). Our physicians collaborate with pharmacists, behavioralists, nutritionists, and others in providing cross-disciplinary care. We admit our own patients to UC Davis Medical Center for medical and obstetrics care. We coordinate care within and between health systems using direct communication and an electronic health record that has access to many outside health systems. Our care teams are focused on caring for the underserved by: Longitudinal primary care of Medi-Cal patients in our UCD teaching center and of Medi-Cal and other under- or uninsured patients in several partner Federally Qualified Health Centers, provided by our faculty and residents. Care of numerous Medi-Cal and uninsured patients on our hospital inpatient service. Examples Include Shared coverage of our UCD family medicine inpatient service between our department's teaching faculty and the UCD hospitalist group. This arrangement offers our residents greater supervision, urgent backup, and opportunities for advanced inpatient care and procedural training. Our joint Family Medicine/Obstetrics program. Three of our faculty are graduates of this program, and work closely with perinatologists in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This allows our practice to provide care for more complex OB patients than is typical for a family medicine program, offering unique training opportunities for our residents.
