Respiratory Therapist, Extended Care Unit, 36hr, Nights

Schedule Details Holidays – Every Third Holiday, Monday through Friday; Weekends (Saturday and Sunday); Weekends – Every Third Weekend Scheduled Hours 7pm-7am Shift 3 – Night Shift, 12 Hours (United States of America) Position Overview This position is responsible for providing all aspects of respiratory therapy in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Respiratory Care Department. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex patient care in all assigned areas. Major Responsibilities Works as part of a team to ensure optimal patient care. Reviews patients electronic medical record for appropriate history, reason for admission, pertinent laboratory/radiological data, current orders. Administers aerosolized medications. Draws and analyzes Arterial Blood Gases and reports critical values per hospital policy. Consults with physician staff concerning the most efficacious forms of therapy, makes recommendations to enhance patient care and communicates effectively with the healthcare team. Monitors patient responses to therapy (vital signs, arterial blood gases) and consults with physician if adverse reactions occur. Provides emergency care including assisting with intubation, Rapid Response Team, High Risk Delivery, and Code Team. Inspects, tests, cleans, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment per department policy. Demonstrates and instructs respiratory care procedures to new staff, other personnel, patients, and families. Provides clinical and general guidance to new, agency, per-diem, and student therapy personnel. Provides direct supervision for respiratory therapy students. Sets up and operates devices such as basic oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilators, CPAP/Bi-level support, NIPPV, high flow oxygen therapy per department policy. Maintains necessary patient and department records on the electronic medical record and medical administration record. Follows hospital policy regarding medication administration. Participates in departmental quality assurance programs. Keeps up-to-date knowledge of current techniques, developments, and issues in respiratory care through attendance at educational meetings, lectures, and conferences. Provides verbal reports including diagnosis, significant past medical history, reasons for admission, treatment goals and plans, patient responses, and suggestions to optimize treatment. Sets up and operates devices such as a body plethysmograph per department policy. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attends meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations. Complies with all health and safety regulations. Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education – Required Associate of Science in Respiratory Care Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Current Massachusetts State Respiratory Care License Basic Life Support Certification Advanced Cardiac Life Support (required within 3 months of employment) Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (required within 3 months of employment) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (required within 3 months of employment) Valid, unrestricted driver’s license recognized by Massachusetts and access to a reliable, insured vehicle License/Certification/Education – Preferred Bachelor of Science or higher Specialty credential issued by the NBRC (ACCS, SDS, NPS, or RPFT) AE-C Certification Experience/Skills – Required Critical care experience, technical and computer skills. Ability to assess patients and make appropriate therapeutic recommendations along the continuum of care from admission to discharge including all aspects of respiratory care from floor therapies to mechanical ventilation and blood gas interpretation. Ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English. Experience/Skills – Preferred Two (2) years of acute care experience Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the responsibilities listed herein may be substituted.
