Job Summary
Performs a variety of skilled mechanical repairs to County vehicles & equipment, specializing in both diesel and gas engines. Valid Driver's License and background check required. Fleet Mechanics must perform the full range of duties assigned and possess the ability to work in the absence of supervision on an on-call basis. Employees in this classification receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

Essential Job Functions
Essential functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment including: Engine and drive train overhaul and repair, electrical components (starters, alternators, etc.) troubleshooting and repair, bearings, brakes and seals installations, hydraulic systems repair, electrical wiring and other components troubleshooting and repair.
Diagnoses fuel, ignition, electrical, and power train malfunctions using computer scanners and various types of electrical testing equipment to determine proper repair procedures.
Installs some and maintains all emergency equipment used on sheriff's patrol and investigation vehicles including emergency strobe lighting, spotlights, roll cages, antennas, radios, sirens, speakers, rear lighting kill and/or strobe accessories, and fabricates mounting devices and supports as needed.
Repairs electrical systems; reads wiring schematics to install, repair and remove accessories used on emergency response vehicles.
Perform major and minor tune-up procedures on County vehicles and equipment. Cleans, washes, services, greases, changes oil, checks lights, brakes, hose tires, belts, and other preventative maintenance on gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Performs preventative and/or corrective maintenance on County vehicles and equipment and determines priority of minor and major repairs on individual equipment and/or vehicles.
Uses computer to maintain records, work orders and notes for each job and repair done on county vehicles and equipment.
Operates equipment as necessary to road test, travel to job sites or bring into or remove from shop; may operate a road service truck.
Assists buyer in ordering parts and supplies.
Performs minor body and fender repairs and painting work.
Maintains a clean and safe work area. Performs duties in a safe manner. Maintains awareness of others in work area.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED :


Automotive Tools, Computerized Repair Equipment, Welders, Cranes, Forklift, Vehicle lifts, Radio Equipment and Computer Equipment.



Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience:


High School diploma or GED; and,


Level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field and a minimum of two years experience; or,


Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.


Licenses and Certifications:


Valid State Driver's License (CDL Class B preferred)



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Various mechanical systems of gasoline and diesel engines.

Standard practices, equipment and tools of the automotive and equipment mechanical trade.
Principles and practices of gasoline and diesel engine repair and maintenance.
Operating and repair characteristics of hydraulic systems.
Principles and practices of fire truck pump and valve repair and maintenance.
Basic principles of record keeping.
Shop mathematics.
Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.


Ability to:
Perform a variety of duties in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing vehicles, equipment and
components.
Inspect automotive, emergency and public works equipment to locate mechanical defects, to diagnose
mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems and to determine corrective procedures.
Estimate time and materials needed for work.
Maintain a variety of shop and repair records and logs.
Use various hand and power driven shop tools.
Prepare and maintain clear and accurate reports.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
