Summary Hampton VAMC in Hampton, VA is seeking a Pulmonologist to diagnose and treat diseases of the respiratory system and breathing‑related conditions, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, tuberculosis, and work‑related lung diseases. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification. Options for residency: (1) ACGME or AOA accredited residency or fellowship completed in the U.S.; (2) One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S.; (3) Non‑U.S. residency followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. Residents in accredited programs who would otherwise meet basic requirements are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under specific conditions. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Pulmonary; preferred experience: 2 years in pulmonary practice. Physical and mental capability to perform essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation. Vision, color vision, hearing, or speech may be required depending on the duties. Reference: For more information, see the VA qualification standards at Duties The position is an open continuous announcement, remaining open until September 30, 2026, or until all positions are filled. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications is June 15, 2026, with subsequent cut‑offs every two weeks. Applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies arise. Provide direct patient care in inpatient and ambulatory clinic settings specific to pulmonary subspecialty. Provide timely screening and resolution of consultations from other disciplines in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Collaborate with the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit to oversee clinical care of MICU patients. Provide therapeutic interventions, diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management within clinical privileges. Order diagnostic tests and interpret results to make appropriate treatment decisions. Supervise residents, fellows, medical students, NP/PA students, and other staff as appropriate. Participate in team meetings, treatment‑planning conferences, and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members. Provide weekend and holiday coverage of the pulmonary and critical‑care consultation service in rotation with other staff pulmonologists. Provide weekend and holiday coverage of the medical inpatient service in rotation at a frequency determined by the Chief of Medicine or Chief of Staff. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff of Medicine within clinical privileges. Recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized for highly qualified applicants.
