Consultant, Archaeologist

We are seeking an experienced Consultant, Archaeologist to support a diverse portfolio of archaeological and heritage projects across the planning, development and infrastructure sectors. The successful candidate will contribute to projects from initial assessment and field investigation through to reporting, interpretation and stakeholder engagement. This role offers the opportunity to work across a range of environments and periods while providing high-quality, practical advice to clients and project teams.


Key responsibilities will include preparing desk-based assessments, heritage statements, written schemes of investigation, project designs and technical reports; undertaking and overseeing archaeological surveys, evaluations, watching briefs and excavations; analysing field results and contributing to post-excavation assessment and publication; and maintaining accurate project records in line with professional and regulatory standards. You will liaise with clients, planning authorities, landowners, contractors and specialist consultants, support the preparation of fee proposals and programmes, and help manage projects to agreed timescales, budgets and quality requirements. The role may also involve supervising field teams, mentoring less experienced colleagues and contributing to business development activities.


Applicants should have a degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology, heritage management or a closely related discipline, together with relevant professional experience in consultancy or commercial archaeology. A sound understanding of the planning system, archaeological standards and current heritage guidance is essential. You will need strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent organisation and attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities while working independently and collaboratively. Practical fieldwork experience, report writing expertise and membership of a relevant professional body are desirable. A full driving licence and willingness to travel, work occasional evenings or weekends, and undertake field-based duties may be required. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound professional judgement, a proactive approach and a commitment to safe, inclusive and high-quality archaeological practice.
