$131.19k - $149.71kStanford University
*Note: This is a one-year fixed-term position, with the possibility of renewal. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. All candidates must be eligible to work and live in the U.S. This position has been deemed critical by the School of Engineering Dean’s Office and is exempt from the hiring freeze. Stanford Engineering has been at the forefront of innovation for nearly a century, creating pivotal technologies that have transformed the worlds of information technology, communications, health care, energy, business and beyond. Our faculty and students are creative risk-takers who pursue excellence across a breadth of disciplines. Our alumni include some of the world's most successful leaders in technology and business. Our staff are critical to enabling Stanford Engineering to accomplish its mission: seeking solutions to some of the world's most urgent challenges and educating leaders who will make the world a better place through the power of engineering principles, techniques, and systems. The Chemical Engineering Department was founded in 1961, and it was initially an outgrowth of the university’s Department of Chemistry. Early faculty pioneered or substantially influenced the emerging field of chemical engineering in many vital areas, including catalysis and transport/fluid mechanics. More recently, the department has added bioengineering and soft-material science to its core areas of excellence and has made a growing commitment to technology development that complements its long-held strength in fundamental applied science and molecular engineering. (Chemical Engineering website: Professor William Tarpeh's research in the Chemical Engineering Department at Stanford has focused on projects that develop and evaluate novel approaches to resource recovery from "waste" waters at several synergistic scales: molecular mechanisms of chemical transport and transformation, novel unit processes that increase resource efficiency, and systems-level assessments that identify optimization opportunities. Reimagining liquid waste streams as resources can lead to the recovery of valuable products and more efficient, less costly approaches to reducing harmful environmental discharges. His research group employs an understanding of electrochemistry, separations, thermodynamics, kinetics, and reactor design to recover resources from waste preferentially. They leverage these molecular-scale insights to increase the sustainability of engineered processes in terms of energy, environmental impact, and cost. ( The Chemical Engineering department is looking for a highly skilled Physical Science Research Professional to support and enhance Professor Tarpeh’s lab through advanced scientific research. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of a scientific discipline or related technologies, along with experience in laboratories focused on physical sciences research. This individual will provide essential technical leadership and advanced expertise for large and complex research initiatives. The core responsibilities of the lab manager will include designing and implementing experimental protocols, coordinating laboratory activities for efficient workflow, and conceptualizing and constructing prototypes related to wastewater treatment across various disciplines. The lab manager will be expected to develop innovative and sophisticated technical solutions and methodologies that align with the lab's overarching research objectives. Additionally, the individual in this role will prepare comprehensive documentation that captures observations, analyses, and interpretations of research results. This documentation will include generating technical reports, detailed summaries, protocols, and analyses that contribute to ongoing projects and future initiatives within the lab. Another key responsibility will be assisting in drafting proposals and establishing a research vision for community-oriented translation and evaluation projects, which are vital to achieving the lab's objectives. The role will also involve coordinating with collaborators for fieldwork, including site visits, and training students on community-engaged research methods and best practices. Furthermore, the position will require the candidate to conduct both laboratory work and fieldwork to advance various projects. The Tarpeh Lab views global challenges as opportunities to integrate resource recovery into waste treatment, avoiding the constraints of outdated 20th-century infrastructure. If this work aligns with your interests and motivation, we invite you to join our team! The expected pay range for this position is $131,188 - $149,712 per annum for positions in Stanford Work Locations.
