We work with architects, owners, contractors, and other construction partners on commercial and institutional projects. Along with structural design, our practice includes construction engineering and demolition consulting. Typical project size ranges from <$1 M to $100 M and includes new and existing structures of all construction types.

About the opportunity

\n

\n

We’re looking for a Structural Engineer with an EIT certification and at least one year of experience in building structural engineering to join our growing DC-area team. You’ll work on new and existing buildings with steel, concrete, timber, and masonry.

\n

\n

You’ll be involved from design through construction, not limited to one phase of a project. That includes schematic design, design development, construction documents, construction administration, site observations, and project closeout. As you gain experience, you'll have opportunities to take on greater responsibility and manage more aspects of your projects.

\n

\n

Our office is in Old Town Alexandria, accessible by Metro, with onsite parking available . Candidates already within commuting distance are preferred. The role is primarily onsite, with one work-from-home day each week.

What you’ll do

\n

\n
• Support structural design and analysis for new and existing buildings.
\n
• Prepare and help review structural calculations, drawings, details, and construction documents.
\n
• Develop proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis and design software.
\n
• Participate in site observations, field investigations, project meetings, and construction administration, with supervision as appropriate.
\n
• Coordinate with WJPA colleagues, clients, architects, contractors, and other project partners.
\n
• Manage assignments and deadlines across multiple active projects.
\n
• Participate in internal quality control and drawing reviews.
\n
• Build your knowledge of building codes, design standards, WJPA’s clients, and our practice.
\n

What you’ll bring

\n

\n
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
\n
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
\n
• At least one year of structural engineering experience involving new and existing buildings.
\n
• Experience or coursework involving structural design with steel, concrete, timber, and masonry.
\n
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
\n
• A collaborative approach, sound judgment, and interest in taking on varied project assignments.
\n
