Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Orthopedic Surgery (Pediatric Outpatient)

Position Summary The Orthopedic Pediatric Outpatient Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) at WashU Orthopedics is an integral clinical leader and valued member of the Pediatric care team. This position practices primarily in the outpatient setting across our Sunset Hills, Children's Hospital and South County locations in St. Louis. Orthopedic experience is preferred. The NP/PA provides primary and/or specialty nursing and/or medical care in a variety of settings; works under physician oversight as required by state regulation. The role requires strong leadership skills to inspire and support staff and the adaptability to navigate changing priorities, workflows, and clinical protocols while maintaining exceptional patient care. Responsibilities Provide direct patient care, including obtaining history, performing assessment, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies. Perform preventive health assessments, screenings, immunizations, and ongoing management of acute and chronic disease conditions. Develop and implement patient‑centered plans of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, consultants, nurses, ancillary providers, and others. Deliver counseling and education to patients and families/caregivers regarding disease management, prevention, and quality‑of‑life measures. Maintain accurate medical records and required reports, statistics, and documentation. Ensure a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with clinic/hospital standards. Manage health conditions via prescriptive authority or referrals, performing diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations. Serve as an expert in the care and management of ITB therapy and pumps, and lead the quality and safety initiative for the program. Assume clinical expertise in rehabilitation nursing, demonstrating autonomy and skill in complex clinical situations. Provide management services for clinical research study projects, monitoring subjects and administering medication while educating families. Adhere to departmental policies, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental and infection control standards. Participate in continuous quality improvement and process improvement activities, and support professional growth through education, literature, and in‑service meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. Working Conditions Work in a normal office and direct patient care setting. Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, chemicals, and other environmental hazards. Physical effort includes sitting at a desk, standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting (≤25 lbs). Use of office equipment, laboratory/research equipment, and clinical/diagnostic equipment. Required Qualifications Education: Master’s degree in Nursing (NP program) or a Graduate of PA program. Certification/License: Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) licensure in Illinois or Missouri; Certified Nurse Practitioner in Illinois or Missouri; current PA license in Missouri and/or Illinois or ability to obtain within three months. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Experience: No specific work experience required; certain additional certifications may be necessary based on specialty. Skills: Clinical decision making, patient education, teamwork, time management, and use of Epic EHR. Driver’s License: Not required.
