Fitness Coordinator

Summary This position is located within the N92 division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department at Naval Air Station Key West, Florida. The purpose of this position is to manage the fitness and wellness programs for the Naval Air Station, Key West, and all tenant commands. The incumbent may also perform duties related to those of a fitness specialist and group fitness instructor. Major Duties and Responsibilities Directly supervises fitness specialists, recreation assistants (fitness), and contract instructors. Provides leadership necessary to maintain an effective and productive workforce. Ensures continuous flow and exchange of information between employees. Trains and leads other employees in various recreation and physical fitness-related positions. Meets regularly with the Fitness Director to strategize how to implement fitness programs and services. Specific Supervision Responsibilities Approving leave. Planning work for subordinates with selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of the assignments and capabilities of employees. Evaluating performance of subordinates. Monitoring workload. Analyzing methods and results and issuing instructions to individuals on work and administrative matters. Interviewing candidates and making selections for appointments, promotions or reassignment. Hearing employee complaints, reviewing and recommending disciplinary actions. Identifying and developing required training for employees. Conducting regular facility equipment and inventory checks. Maintaining clean and safe facilities by ensuring cleaning duties are performed. Assisting the Fitness Director Planning, development, administration, and coordination of all fitness programs for all eligible patrons covering all components of the Navy’s Wellness, Health, and Physical Readiness Programs. Developing individual fitness and wellness programs unique to the individual needs of each patron. Promoting and publicizing services available through a variety of sources. Assisting Fitness Specialists with supervising Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling Series (NOFFS), Mission Nutrition Command Fitness Leader Course and other CNIC Headquarters supported programs. Assisting with marketing and promotion of fitness programs. Personal Training and Group Exercise Coordinating the design, supervision, coaching, and instruction of a variety of group exercise programs (e.g., Step, Spin, Water Aerobics) inside and outside of the fitness facilities. Coordinating fitness training and programming to groups of various sizes. Coordinating certified personal training services to all eligible patrons. Coordinating instruction of patrons in the proper use of all equipment for training and self‑monitored progress by preparing written instruction and procedures. Coordinating training tips on the fitness floor to prevent unsafe or ineffective exercise techniques. Coordinating written instruction and procedures for performance of work, use of equipment, safety, and well‑being. Coordinating the proper implementation and maintenance of conditioning and training programs for aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, and flexibility training. Coordinating administration of fitness testing, including measuring aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, and blood pressure. Ensuring the incumbent stays current and ensures fitness specialists stay current with the latest fitness programming ideas to increase attendance and improve customer satisfaction. CFL/FEP Outreach Coordinating with Fitness Specialists, CFLs, and ACFLs to provide certified personal training and group exercise services to active duty military. Coordinating the instruction of the Command Fitness Leader course and fitness related general military training. Overseeing Fitness Specialists’ role in working with various command representatives to develop and implement physical fitness programs for military personnel. General Responsibilities Ensuring fitness spaces and equipment are clean and maintained. Performing basic equipment maintenance and repair. Assisting with inspecting facilities and equipment and correcting discrepancies. Notifying supervisor of any maintenance problems or deficiencies requiring outside assistance. Selecting and recommending procurement actions for required exercise equipment and supplies while staying within budgetary constraints. Conditions of Employment Meet federal employment suitability requirements and successfully complete a background investigation. Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check. Complete the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process requiring two forms of identification from the Form I-9. May be required to pass pre‑employment examinations. Hold a valid state driver’s license to operate motor vehicles. Submit salary to a financial institution via Direct Deposit/E‑Funds Transfer. Must be C.A.R.E. trained, hold an Emergency First Responder or CPR First Aid certification, and hold a current Food Handler certification or obtain these within 90 days of hire. Be willing to work irregular hours, including early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends, and holidays when required. Comply with the REAL ID Act for access to government facilities. Perform moderately strenuous physical labor, lifting objects up to 45 pounds unassisted and heavier weight with assistance. Willing to relocate within a 50 mile radius of NAS Key West, FL. Qualifications Applicants must demonstrate experience and knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) applicable to this position. The following are required: Extensive experience in physical education and knowledge of exercise physiology principles and teachings. Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and certification from an NCCA‑accredited health/fitness organization. Knowledge of safe use and operation of fitness equipment, facility operations, and basic fitness equipment maintenance/repair. Skill in planning and carrying out an enhanced recreation specialty program meeting community needs. Skill and ability to provide fitness training and programming to individuals and groups. Skill in using Microsoft Office applications. Ability to independently carry out fitness programs using proper principles and techniques. Ability to lead and supervise a diverse team to provide exceptional customer service. Ability to conduct accurate fitness testing and recommend programs based on goals. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and technically sound reports. Ability to develop and deliver presentations and/or training. Effective oral and written communication skills. Relevant experience must be quantified in hours per week and include volunteer and part‑time experience as appropriate. Experience may be substituted with education per DoD guidelines.
